Wastegate Problems...help?!?!
Wastegate Problems...help?!?!
So, I'm having trouble with my turbo....well...I think that is my problem now. I think the wastegate is dumping when it isn't supposed to. I am waiting for II to call me back ........for hours.....as usual.
Can someone explain to me if the wastegate can still open even if I plug or clamp the air tube that usually opens it? Can it be stuck or not seat good? I really have no concept of the internal workings of it. Diagrams? It seems to dump boost between 20 and 30 PSI and fluctuate when it does it. I can make 35 maybe if my pedal is completely smashed, but I can't see the 43 I'm suposed to. I jerked the wastegate elbow and put a 1/8 plug in it and still can't make boost. It jerks and bucks the entire truck when it does it. My clamps are tight and I have inspected the entire system for boost leaks....except I can't prove it is the wastegate...I just think it is.
What's the deal? Anyone with some insight????

If you have an air compressor and regulator, blow 20psi air into the wastegate hose and see what happens...if nothing go to 25psi, 30psi, 35psi, 40psi, etc., until something happens!
The wastegate arm should move at 40psi I believe...if it moves before that, I think you've found a problem you need to discuss with II!
NOTE! YOu'll nee to blow air through the fitting that the hose would normally blow thorugh...!
Make sense??

You will have to do a search either on post or Pictures. I can't remember where I saw it, but there are some good pictures of turbos and waste gates. It is just a flap that opens and closes a hole about the size of your finger in the back of the turbo. It either works or is stuck. The stock WG actuator is simply a diaphragm that pushes a spring loaded rod. If you disconnect the stock WG actuator rod, you should be able to operate the WG by hand with your finger. I can't understand why you would need that much boost. I would be worried about a blowing a head gasket. Sorry I just figured out....are you talking about the Big head or some other aftermarket WG?
Wow....
I would be pretty concerned about disabling the waste gate like you did by plugging the actuator air supply line in conjunction with the bucking and jerking the entire truck like you describe. Sounds like severe surge, but I have no experience to help you out by giving you any advice on that.
The advice I will give is to stop trying so hard to make boost and take it easy until you talk to II. From the sound of it you seem to be risking tearing something up. I mean it could be something stupid like a bad gauge.
Waste gate operation is pretty straight forward and generally reliable as hell. Keep us posted as to what you find out.

Well, I don't know if this is a "fix" or not, but Edge told me to turn the "back-down" setting up to 15 or so. I now have it on 25 and it fixed the problem. Seems these two weeks of farting around with every screw under the hood boils down to a fueling module (Edge Juice/Att) problem. Well, maybe not a problem, but that fixed it. Now, I need to figure out exactly what the "back-down" actually does and see if that is what I want to happen or if I really do have another issue somewhere. Maybe someone at Edge can expain it to me better, I haven't had time to call them back yet. What a PIA!!!
