Upgrade plans - Does this sound right?

My 02 is ready for some more power. Recently got a 5th Wheel and it pulls her ok, but I'd like a bit more pep.

I have a 4" exhaust and upgraded intake along with the Edge Juice w/attutude box/gauges.

My plans are to get an Air Dog II, then possibly a set of Mach 1.6s. Then wait for the tranny to go and upgrade it. Does this sound about right using the vp44 and the stock turbo?

I'm looking for some input if this is the right path to be taking??? Love the truck and I'm only at 100k so I figure I'm ready!
Thanks -Mike

Yes...definately before doing anything else, I'd upgrade the LP!

Depending on the size of the 5th whl, the 3:55 gears are going to put added strain on an auto tranny. It can be done, I tow a 7k lb boat but keep OD locked out in town or w/hills. Your list of priority looks ok but make sure you're ready to replace the tranny sooner than later. My Mach 1.6s run great w/hx-35 turbo.

I have 3.55 gears and tow a fiver at 10.5 grw and after 50 mph I use od all the time. I never had a problem with the truck except the factory TC was junk. I now have a billet single with a 1600 stall. I did not know I should not be towing in OD with this truck. will the 1.6 sticks help give me a better towing ???? later Don

It's not that you can't tow w/3:55 or tow using OD. I do both, plus have 35" tires. There is more strain on a tranny w/3:55 gears and then to add the OD, a stock tranny won't last long. Keeping OD locked out causes the tranny to push more ATF and higher ATF psi, thus helping to keep it cool. All at the same time keeping your RPMs up so you don't lug the motor. The Mach1.6 give you more fuel, thus more power and yes leads to improved towing. Hope this helps...JMO.

I run 285/75/16 e rated rubber. I think the smaller tire is easier on the tranny. I have been reading all the posts I see about sticks , I would like to add a few some more hp to my truck for towing , but I don`t want to have to watch the pyro all the time. I do let my wife drive the truck and I know she would not be looking at gauges. So just what will the 1.6 give me for extra power over stock sticks ??? I would like just a little more without killing the great MPG I get now. would another 50 hp do it ? thanks Don

I read tons and tons of info before buying my Mach 1.6. They're the best
your going to get but aren't the cheapest
allow you to run your factory turbo
don't smoke that much unless you lug it
and add power and won't effect your mpgs!
W/my setup EGTs very rarely hit 1200*... I'd save for them rather than buying something else cheaper.

Well I called DTR 877-375-1956 3 hrs ago and I did not get a call back. I wanted to know if they sold the 1.6 or could supply them at what cost. They never called me back . I will find a set for my truck and have them installed. thanks for your help.

I wouldnt trust a single disc lockup for towing or fooling around on street. I killed mine after a few years and now its back in the shop being rebuilt. Did a 4-disc this time.

We are pulling an 11,000lb 5 wheel with 3.55's and the mods in my sig. The truck pulls fine, EGT's are not a problem, even in the mountains. The trans and TC are bone stock so far although i do plan on some upgrades as $$ allow. One thing for sure though is to lock out OD on the big climbs.

Cheers!

Mike

The 1 flaw I see in your plan is that since you have an 02 auto, that means yet have a hy 35 turbo, not the hx 35 others have. The hy has a 9 cm exhaust housing instead of the hx 12 cm which means will will not boost as much and have higher egt's.
If you stay with your current plan... Getting sticks before more air... I think you will have to turn the juice down to stage 1 or 2 and even then keep a close eye on egt's while towing. Just my .02
