Upgrade plans

Hi guys! I've been reading these forums for a while and I'm convinced that yall know your stuff.

I bought my truck used a month or so back and have been doing minor repairs as weather permits. I don't have a garage darn it. I'm pretty sure I need some injector service and I gather that POD's are the way to go. I also assume that the VE injector pump will need to be tweaked to match. I also plan to get the 16cm2 turbo housing upgrade probably at the same time.

So what's the best way to tweak the pump? Is there somebody nearby in Kansas that can help me with it. I live in Coffeyville in southeast KS.

When I bought my truck it was advertized as having 160,000 miles on it so the engine is just getting broke in. I plan to use Rotella synthetic oil and I just bought 12 Purolator filters on Ebay. I am already using PS fuel additive but it hasn't helped the worn injectors.

The getrag tranny seems a little noisy in 4th gear if I let the revs get to low. However it shifts fine and I have nothing to compare it to noise wise. If I need to go to the NV4500 conversion, has anyone had any dealings with Phonix-Remanufactured-Transmissions?

The price seems to be good but I don't know how much the parts for conversion will cost.

Anyway, tonight I just discovered that my left window motor is sticking so something else to fix. All in all though I am happy with the truck considering that I am capable of the fixup work and It's what I can afford. Credit isn't good enough for a good used 3rd gen. and besides I kind of like it now that I'm getting to know it. No **** computer to worry about and a tweakable injector pump.

Regards

Edwin

Sounds like a good plan. I assume you'll add gauges before you start tweaking on it. For info on turning up the pump, go to the tech facts section and look at the 1st gen FAQ. Read the article and report back with your questions. The input shaft bearing is probably the cause of the trans noise.

Would there be no noise at higher rpm's? How much of a deal is the bearing to change? Is it worth the effort? I'm planning to tow a 32' 5th wheel RV so I'm worried about the reliability of the tranny. I would much rather change it out before I am forced to get repairs out in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, I should have mentioned gauges are also on the list.

Thanks

Edwin

The trans has to come out and be partially disassembled. Then you have to reset the preload because you're changing the bearing.

If it's quiet in neutral with the clutch out I don't think I'd bother yet. Just change the fluid and run a good synthetic like Mobil 1 5W-30 or Redline MTL, and overfill it by a quart.

What if it is sometimes noisey in neutral? Mine is noisey at times when I come to a stop. If I engage and disengage the clutch a couple times it sometime quiets down. What does this mean????

Just worry about getting gauges and maybe doing the exhaust and air intake for now. I'd wait til summer to mess with the pump. Right now, you probably have the winter mix and when they switch back for the season, you might run into EGT problems and have to turn it back.

What does that entail, full removal? By TO I assume you mean the throw-out bearing on the clutch. If I am doing that do I do the clutch as well and the output shaft? It seems like it could be a lot of work for a small thing, should I try to combine jobs... I suppose I check it all and go from there...

If the clutch is good there is no need to mess with it. The TO bearing can be noisy for a very long time before it causes any problems. You have to pull the tranny and then depending on the setup, you might just be able to slip the old bearing out of the fork. Slip in the new bearing and re-install the tranny. Make sure you put the bearing in with the moving part toward the clutch. (Believe it or not I had a guy put one in backwards. He wondered why his clutch wouldn't disengage.)
