Turnbuckled my wastegate this weekend
I finally got around to trying out the turnbuckle method on my wastegate. Before doing that I could only get 20psi @WOT and now I can get about 32psi@WOT with my edge comp on level 3X3. I didn't notice the power as much as I did with the cooler exhaust temps. I used to be able to hit 1350* on 3X3 REALLY fast and now I can keep on it all I want and it only gets up to 1200* and maybe 1250* at the highest. That right there was worth it for me, those exhaust temps before really prevented me from ever being able to really lay into it. I heard of some people getting boost up into the 40's with the turnbuckle but mine sure doesn't. Maybe my boost gauge is wrong???

You only tested it at 3x3. It will go higher but 32 is about all you want for good efficiency. Anything higher will just over rev your turbo and pump super heated air to the engine.
Also could be your altitude? I loose 10 psi boost going from 650' (can pull 52 psi) to Denver area (max about 42 psi.).

Well I did put it on 5X5 and tried it out, but I pretty much got the same results with boost. I think max I hit 35psi, but my temps were up again to around 1350*( took longer to get there though so that's good!! ). I hardly ever put it on 5X5 so I'm not to concerned about over boosting. I just wanted to try it out to see if I got lower EGTS because it sucked not being able to stay in the throttle for more than a few seconds at a time. And yeah, I'm sure this good ol' altitude here doesn't help much with these turbos!!!!

One other thing...just incase you did not figure it out on your own....you need to saftey wire the turnbuckle, to keep it from vibrating loose...cause they definately will!

Yeah I kinda found that out the other day I sort of had a feeling that it would seeing how I couldn't fit my big OL' gorilla hand in between everything to get it super tight. I actually fixed it a different way so that I could actually control my boost instead of having it locked shut. Give me a little bit today and I will try to get some pics up of my setup.
I used a turnbuckle to hook onto the back of the wastegate actuator, then I hooked a 5" spring to that and then used another turnbuckle and bolted it to my bracket for my alternator. That setup works AWESOME. All I have to do to adjust my boost is crank on the turnbuckle up by the alternator to stretch that spring and WAAAA LAAAA a manuel boost controller!!!!! Works great!!
So I will hopefully get some pics up today so I can show you guys what it looks like!!

There is no need to turn buckle your turbo....you have an HX35 with a 12cm housing that accepts the supplied boost elbow with the Comp......all the boost elbow does is prolong the opening of the wastegate to the point where it will become relatively ineffective. You will find that if you blocked the wastegate completely with a pipe plug, you will have similar results as the boost elbow. The turn buckle arrangement forces the wastegate to stay shut even though boost pressure is being supplied to the actuator......this is done on the HY35 because of the steel wastegate line that does not accept the boost elbow. The turn buckle will not allow anymore boost than what you already have.

Yep totally agree!!! The HY series got screwed on the wastegate having that retarded hard line. Turnbuckling the wastegate might give you a little more boost than the elbow, ( seeing how its locked shut ) but depending on your mods you might end up over boosting the turbo and throwing it out of its eff. range. In CODODGE's case the elbow is the right option!!

I've got that in, is there a chance I don't have it tight enough? The instructions said to be careful of over tightening?!?! can it come loose?
Or....you can lie and tell me the turbo sux and I need a new one....maybe a super b or something else?!?!

What kind of boost numbers are you running??? That will determine if you need to do something else or not................and yes stock turbo's SUCK!!! I'm waiting for winter to come so I can swap mine out!!

I'm waiting for winter because I pretty much leave my truck sit during the cold ugly months. To much gravel and that stupid MAG Chloride they use here ruins my wheels, so I just take it out on nice sunny days!! Plus I can take my time doing the swap since I won't be needing to have it put back together quick. That and being summer time, cash is a little low due to warm weather spending habits
So as far as your boost goes, I don't think I would go much over that with your stock turbo. These turbo's aren't really efficient past 30 to 32 psi. If anything it might hurt your power a bit since it's getting close to maxing out on boost and blowing more hot air instead of cooler dense air. You can always try the turnbuckle as an option, mine cost me less than $10 smackers to do so it won't break the bank.
With mine totally locked shut I see 32psi, and I honestly couldn't tell any difference power wise jumping 4 psi. Now going from my 20psi to 32psi I could sure tell a difference
