Turbo Issues

Pulled my fifth wheel for it's inaugeral(sp?) run with the truck the past weekend. Ran into some issues immediately. When pulling up a hill or long incline, I ran into poor power issues. Putting more pedal into it didn't help. I tried turning up my power dial from quarter to half, with no change. On one hill the turbo kicked in and we started wailing up the hill, then like someone turned a switch, the boost dropped from ~24lbs to 13lbs, and no more power. After tinkering, I turned the dial to the lowest setting, ie more or less off, and that's what worked best, but no great power, especially in 5th gear. No smoke or issues like that, and I got 17mpg. My air filter is quite dirty, but not sure that could make that kind of difference. Sounds sort of like a wastegate issue, but I don't know what kind there is in the 99 24V? I know when I last cleaned the air filter I was way too liberal with the AFE. When I changed the intercooler boots this spring I noticed a small amount of oil in the tube. New fuel pump, and decent fuel pressure the whole trip. Any ideas or questions? Thanks

i don't know for sure about what you have for a power adder but i had a similar thing happen to me i was pulling a trailer up north to do some four wheeling and we hit some hills and all of a sudden we hit one hill and it was like someone flicked a switch and turned off the power. what it ended up being was the engine warmed up over 200 degrees and my edge from the manufacturer was set to defuel at 200 degrees engine temp so i went from +75hp to stock when it shut down so all i had to do is go in and set the defuel parameters to a higher temp and it never did it again. I don't know if yours has a similar safety feature or not but thats what happened to me good luck.

Sounds possible. I have a Blue Chip Diesel chip/programmer/module, adjustable dial up to 90hp, no longer being made. The water temp only got up to 90C, about 190F, so not sure if that's it, however that is warmer than it normally gets not pulling a trailer. Very tempted to completely disconnect the chip/module and go from there. It is tapping the VP44, but not a big deal to disconnect.

Everything works as normal when not towing, and therefore it's not running as warm. Has to be the temperature that's causing it to defuel, although apparently the Blue Chip APB won't do that itself, has to be something other than that telling it to ease up.

190*F is normal operation Temp. Should have a 195* T-stat in it.

Dirty air filter.... and you admit to way too much oil treatment on filter.
Sounds like could be source of low power.

Does your Blue Chip have a boost fooler incorporated in it. 24 PSi boost could have caused defueling if not?

Turned out the filter wasn't as dirty as I thought, easily visible light through it, cleaned it anyway. The Blue Chip does have a boost fooler, it has a sub harness that goes into the MAP. I originally was very suspicious of the Chip, but it works fine with no trailer, 20+psi right until I feel the need to slow down for legal reasons, lol.
