is a Turbo Auto Diesel full B1 rebuildable?

took a 350 miles trip today pulling small trailer of about 3k total weight, doing about 75 most of the way, TST off, smarty on 3, only got above 1200 a few times when pulling away from toll booth etc, but has some sustained pulls on grades of 1200* or less, never sustained any higher than 1200, if it went that high id back off.

anyway 1 mile before i get home i come to a redlight and all is well, take off from light and thru each gear as the turbo spools i hear this grinding or hard whitsle noise that makes the turbo whistle seem like a whisper because it was way louder...only happened when it was building boost, no matter how much i rev it from idle i cant get the sound to come back. kinda sounds like the wheel may have been rubbing in the housing.

took the intake off, no more shaft play then its ever had and spins free with no noise. im baffled now. not sure if i broke it, but i guess tomorrow night i get to yank it off the truck and see if it needs a rebuild. its either in the bearings or the turbine wheel, the compressor side looks great.

Yes the turbo can be rebuilt..... Depending on what you need plan on $400 and up, plus shipping both ways. The exhaust housing may be cracked so you might consider getting it replaced if it is. Also a wastegate can be added if your is a non-wasted version.

Check your ducting, turbo to intake manifold for split boot or other leak - won't see it at idle bcause Boost isn't required at no-power scenarios, such as idle

will do that also...it crossed my mind, start with cheap fixes first,

but i dont see how it could be a boot, i drove over 2 hours steady on the way back pulling anywhere from 10-35psi the entire way cruising, why would it just all the sudden split or start leaking after i ginally stop at a redlight then take off again?

regardless i will check that before i go pulling the turbo off

Mine doesn't grind but there is a definate loud whistle coming through the stacks that was never there and then suddenly it showed up. I've put well over 1000 hard miles on it if not more and it hasn't had an issue. Just a little slower spool up but that might be the tighter converter. It happened the day I went to get the trans rebuilt so I'm not sure. Still hit the same boost and still have the same EGT's (pegged).

Sometimes if you listen real close you can hear a clinking sound after thetruck is shutdown (turbo spinning down) through the exhaust. If you have this sound it probably means new bearings.

II or HTT could rebuild that and probably cheaper. You might want to call and check.

*opens wallet...dust an bugs fly out*

id love that 66, but its not a good time LOL

also for an update: i let the truck cool for about 2 hours, then got in it to drive around the block and see if it was still doing it...NOTHING. no sound, boost is fine.

so i ended up going to the gf's house and ten home again and the truck is fine. no noise or ill affects

I've been running my TAD B1-2 for about 50-60K now, never had an issue with it. I've pulled my 11K toy hauler at 1100-1200* sustained for close to an hour and at 900+ for about 2 hours solid and it sounds the same as the day I bolted it on.

IIRC, Ken Diaz told me that with no oil pressure to the bearing you can actually push down slightly on the turbine shaft and make the impeller hit the housing, but it doesn't hit when the motor's up and running and the turbo is spinning.

If it spins freely without hitting when the motor is off, I might look elsewhere for the source of the noise......

When the turbo is building boost, obviously that means you're loading up the drive train. I had a vibration under load that turned out to be the center support bearing.....

Did you ever get that hole welded up to see if that was the prob?

Nah. Put some jb weld on there and it lasted long enough for me to realize that that wasn't the issue.

it still hasn't come back, oh well not gonna complain since the truck is running great.

also i finally had the B1 surge on me. i was pulling a long grade on this trip with the 3k trailer and i was doing about 65 in 6th, well i came up on a rig in the truck lane which was about to end and i didnt wanna get stuck behind a rig doing 40mph so i hammered down to get passed him and when the boost hit about 25 it started surging. downshift to 5th and away i went and never had another surge or issues the rest of the trip.
