looking for a rebuildable head

I would like to find a "cheap" rebuildable head so that when I tackle my headgasket, I dont have any down time or unexpected surprises, not sure if these heads are prone to cracking, mine has near 500,000kms on it, and seeing as its my source of income, I'd like to have a head ready to install, instead of having to wait to have mine resurfaced/valves done

thanks

Clayh has a fairly fresh 03 CR head available, you send him a PM. That way you just slam on the new head and be done with it. You would have to bug Haisley for a set of connector tubes for a CR head.

If your 24v is still good, not cracked, sell it or keep it as a spare. I have three 24v cracked head in my garage. The 12v stuff seems to take the heat/egt's better than the 24v stuff.

Thanks for the replies guys, I sent off some PM's.
Mike what is actually involved in the CR head swap, and is the pain really worth the gain??

I'm gonna hold off for at least another two weeks before pulling my truck off the road, (no time to do it yet) hopefully something affordable pops up, How much are headstuds...400$??? this head repair is seriously cutting into the budget set aside for DTT valvebody and TC

I've never done the CR head to 24V VP head swap, but I think that the only think that you would require is the connector tube adapters. As for its worth, depends on how money you save is worth the hasle and if you can find a good head. Actually the 24V VP head is getting harder and harder to find a good one these days.

You could also call Harry at Peak, he has cummins parts connection. The cummin parts dealers here seem to add a quite a large $$$ amount of increase vs. a US part. For example, I've been looking for a remote oil cooler for my CTD. Here the parts is worth roughly $520 and its a special order. Out of a cummins parts dealer in Chicago, it was $300. Same original cummins part.

As for finding a cheap head, good luck, I've been there once or twice myself. Sometimes its cheaper to buy a complete low miler engine, than buy the parts for it. I guess thats why I have five spare engines. I'm waiting for an aftermarket head that doesn't have all the manufacturer casting issues.

The CR head isn't a perfect repair, as it has a few more issues than the 24v VP head. Dropping valves seats, sticking valves. Of course this may not be an issue if you don't run mega egt's. I have three 12v heads, with burnt out sunk valves. 12v heads seem to take more abuse than a 24v head.

I've still got my CR head. It was bought new from Cummins about 2 years ago so it shouldn't have any of the loose valve seat problems.
