Thumbs up Train Horn

Hey guys and gals,

I know there have been several past posts on here regarding train horn mounting and such but i was wondering if I could get some advice/suggestion from some other dieselheads.

I recently purchased a Quad Hammer 4 horn train horn kit from Siege Engineering. I still need to buy an air tank.

The kit came with 3/8" hard air line. I have read where people have used and/or preferred 1/2" air line. What are the pros/cons of running 1/2" as opposed to 3/8"?

Also, I bought a $5 horn button from Auto Zone but a fellow co-worker of mine said a buddy of his used that same button on train horn set up on his truck. He said the button stuck and burned the compressor up

I am also wondering what is the best set up that yall have found. Toggle Switch, lanyard, or horn button?

Thanks in advance with your help in this manner!

Bigger line will flow more air so to speak. For example if you have a 1'2" line and a 3/8" line both at 125 PSI, the 1/2" line will flow more air than the 3/8 due to the larger cross sectional area of the pipe.

Don't know what to tell ya on the button though, I have never had to wire one in (I don't have air horns yet).

Yeah I just got the same kit (gold horns came instead of the silver ones for some reason... uhg) on Friday for $150. Why do you need a tank, didn't your kit come with the 3L/5L tank compressor combo?

The thing about running 1/2" lines, or heck even these 3/8" lines, with the Hammer4 bells is the simple fact that we have a 1/4" inlet on the horn itself. You're gonna get condensation when trying to force that much more volume through a small opening. And condensation will ruin your reeds, and therefore your purrdy new horn. If you truly want the full advantage of 1/2" lines to an air horn, you'll either have to find bells with a 1/2" inlet, or drill it out to 1/2" like I am doing right now. Gonna sound real nice

I picked up a toggle switch, but I'm thinking I'm just gonna tap into my horn wire. Really don't think I'll like going hunting for a toggle switch for the horn when I'm spittin fire trying to honk at other motorists. But I think lanyards are awesome, might pick me up one of those...

That's what I'm thinking of doing, should I ever get an air horn.

Have a relay triggered by the OEM horn lead.
OEM horn will work for quick beep beeps, but lay on the button and the air horn will kick in for the folks with cell phones glued to their ears.

Get an manual valve with a lanyard, 1/2" line, you'll be set. Watch out for cops when you use it. Those train horns are loud, but I think I perfer the deep tone of a long single trumpet.
