Turbo59power,

Warranty issues are basically a product of the dealer you deal with, most won't mess with you on this issue but I'd call'em under a fake name and ask them, then you know for sure!

Concerning straight piping a 2003, check around first, most of the folks that have done it haven't liked the sound much at all. In fact we have supplied a number of those same owners with our system after they tried the straight piping idea. Lots of them say it sounds like one of the low rider rice burner cars you see now a days. Call us if we can help.

Re:Striaght pipe or not

I agree. I heard one and it sounded like a whispy 4 cyl honda with a weed eater stuck in the tail pipe. Sounds nothing at all like the 12v's. ;D

Re:Striaght pipe or not

If the '03 CTD had a "Real" turbo on it , it would not sound that way. The Single scroll HY turbine housing is the culprit of the weird exhaust tone.
Interesting. Please explain.

I have a 24v straight piped and it sounds like any other Cummins straight piped except a little quieter ???. I do have a exhaust brake and I was wondering if that was the reason.

Here's a thought. Had to dust off a bunch of brain cells to retrieve the info, but I think it may explain a bit better.
Noise reduction is accomplished by turbulence within the area of flow. Bends in the pipe, changing direction (as in a chambered muffler), cooling of the gasses, turbochargers, anything that disrupts the flow.
In shadetree mechanic terms while relating a story;
You know how much noise a jet fighter makes? That's an example of "smooth flowing" gasses. The faster they get out, the more power is available. We had the same problem on the Antelope. Her UATA powerplant was a marine version of, I think, the J-79 that powered the F-4 Phantom. With straight stacks, she had quite a bark. Add baffles and water injection, and you couldn't here her. However, it took away about 20% of the top end due to back pressure.
Hope that helped 'splain things.

Shortround out

I heard a straightpiped '03 a few months back one day pulling a loaded horse trailer and it sounded just like any other 24V out the tailpipe? ???

Re:Striaght pipe or not

I straight piped my 1998 12v. I removed the scrubber and the stock muffler, then drove it over to the local muffler shop and for $78 they put in a straight pipe.

What I do like is the fact that your can hear the turbo ALL the time. When it's warmed up and your sitting at a stop light, the turbo sound bounces off the other vehicles really nice.

What I am not real crazy about is the way it sounds when you stomp on it. Cross-barred it sounds just like an OTR semi with 5 in straight pipes. It REALLY barks!! For performance it REALLY made a huge difference in the "get-up-and go" even my wife noticed.

When cruising down the freeway it is really not much louder than stock. Of course that ALL changes when you put your foot in it!

My 4" straight piped, HY35 equipped truck sounds beautiful and nothing like a ****** off weed eater. ???

Re:Striaght pipe or not

I have a 99, with a fresh mufflerectomy last Wednesday. Yeah, it's loud, but I can't seem to get enough of it. It's addictive. I find myself rolling the passenger window down and driving next to the Jersey wall or beside another car just to get the noise reflection. ;D
Getting under bridges, when you floored it about 50 feet in front of the bridge, is REALLY nice. ;D ;D ;D
When I turn down the PM3 it really quiets down though. If you are stock it probably won't be that loud.
Like others said, when cruising it is pretty quiet.

For those of you with a second gen. thinking about the Scotty II, once you have a mufflerectomy you won't be concerned about the noise the Scotty's hole makes.

Chris

When your truck is idling and you stand at the tail pipe, what does it sound like?

Mine sounds like air whooshing out with a low drone.

I didn't hear this while in the cab.

Re:Striaght pipe or not

Mine sounds kinda like a coach's whistle. You know the one with the piece of cork in it to break up the sound? It sounds like that but without so much tone, and more air whooshing though. The turbo obviously causes the sound "break up". It sounds just like big trucks I have heard that are straight piped.

Chris

Re:Striaght pipe or not

Thanks for the info.

Just as a FYI, I called a local semi shop that does exhaust and they were more than willing to fit me with what ever I needed to go to 4 in!!!

The prices they quoted me for mandrel bent 4 in pipe is as follows:
Straight = $4.73 per foot
Elbows = $28 - 35 per elbow
UClamps = $2.64 each
BandClamps = $4.72 each
3 in to 4 in adapter (for the turbo down pipe) = $24.92

If the system was welded together the band clamps could be eliminated.
Re:Striaght pipe or not

That ends up being a little less than you can buy a kit for, at least the Summit kit. They have the best price on aluminzed mandrel bent I have seen. It comes with a straight-through, glasspack-type muffler.

Chris
Idling, if you stand right at the tail pipe, it has a very nice, but loud growl to it, and you can hear the turbo softly whistling. Now when somebody else drives it past you, and gets into the throttle... oh my... it is quite loud and awesome. I absolutely love the sound, though the in cab drone between 1900 - 2200 RPM is quite annoying.

Tom
