Stock auto trans upgrades???

I have a stock auto trans with 39k on it now. My truck is an 01 with 4" exhaust and k&n. I am going to add an edge comp and was wondering what I should do to the tranny. I don't have a lot of money to spend on it but I don't want to kill the tranny either. Will the stock transmission hold up for a while or am I going to smoke this tranny quick-like? I am installing an egt gauge and a boost gauge too.
HELP!
Thanks

By the way, it's on 38" tires w/ 3.54 gears and I drive it pretty agresively and sometimes tow a 5500lb trailer.

Up the line pressures or put a Transgo shift kit in it at the very least. i also run a converter unlock/stock switch. still running strong with over 300hp. just don't slip the lockup clutch for more than a quick second or so.....going up a long hill with it slipping will leave you stranded at the top.

What does it take to up the line pressures on the tranny? Is this something I can do or leave it to the professionals? Thanks.

i didn't do mine with a pressure guage, though i should have. with a 24valve, Bill K. says that you need one due to the stock tolerances ranging very far. for the 3rd gens, i'd suspect the same.

all you do is to shorten up an allen wrench (3/16" i believe) so it fits into a bolt on the side of the valve body. then turn it. i turned the line pressure screw 3 turns and i turned the light throttle shift screw 1 1/2 turns (for a later light throttle shift). that's it.

Contact some of the favourite vendors of the guys here DTT and ATS are the biggest choose which you prefer based experiences with the companies. I would also maybe try to grab a ride in someones with each tranny. Then make your decision based on your own likes.

And yes a comp will toast your tranny if you hook the wire up :'(

Re:Stock auto trans upgrades???

Jaime's right... the comp will fry the stock tranny. Even an EZ will work on it after some time and heavy towing. Raising the pressures will hold (probably), but the converter is waaay too loose stock to properly transfer the power a comp puts out. I'd suggest driving the various vendors and choose what you like best. Also, I'm selling my tranny (or whole truck... whichever goes first), and I'm willing to deal. PM me if you're interested.

Re:Stock auto trans upgrades???

of course i recommend a full tranny upgrade..or the most that you can afford, but here's what i wrote today on the TDR:

"lmills is correct.....except read it again. i have an UNLOCK switch to keep the converter from slipping. so if i'm doing 50-55mph in OD, it wont lock up. if i do, it will slip pretty easily if i get into the throttle. so for medium/hard acceleration, i do not drive with the converter locked. and i don't believe in running around with 1200rpms locked, even on a stock truck.

of course, once you illiminate one weak link, you go on to the next...

going down the road i'm constantly thinking hp/tourqe curve versus rpms (trans pump pressure output) versus throttle position (line pressure through valve body) versus trans temp."

like i say, if you drive it right, it can hold- it's a gamble either way. the loose fluid coupling does suck, and will aid towards high egts because you'll be blowing through the converter running high rpms.

Limping strong, ;D

My advice is to go ahead and get an ATS TripleLok and ATS Valve Body. You will SMILE for a long time after that! Also, your trans will last a LOT longer. I got a complete ATS rebuild at 107,000 miles, but my TC was slipping, and it was only a matter of time until the stock TC clutch disintegrated. Yes you will spend some money, but you will save your trans!

Re:Stock auto trans upgrades???

RRausch thats a little bias comment there are many other good transmissions out there to choose from not just ATS. there is suncoast and DTT to name a couple. I had a suncoast TQ and a transgo shift kit for about a year before I threw to much power at it and went to a DTT tranny and I would never go any other direction if I had a new truck I would get the trans done first by DTT its amazing the differnece the truck has. My opinion would be ride in 2 trucks similar to yours and get a feel for them with eash trans. Pick which one you like best and go from there. Remember do lost of research before choosing.

Lets hope that cooler heads prevail in this tranny discussion than did in the last one.
