Smoking....no clue

I'll try to shorten this thread, but I want to provide detail.
My fuel mileage has progessively gotten worse. I've noticed lately, that I'm making more smoke than usual under any driving condition; both off the line low boost, and normal driving (70 or so) loaded boost. I recently pulled into a fast food joint for a quick bite, turned off the truck (have a timer) and was walking away when the truck started belching a huge cloud of smoke. I mean huge. Embarrasingly so. Mostly a gray white color. I quickly turned the truck off, went under the hood, and could find nothing out of place. Let the truck sit for 30 minutes, and started it back up like absolutely nothing had happened. Poor mileage and more smoke than nornal continued, but no additional instances occured.
I just returned from a three week military school and the truck was parked the entire time. Drove it yesterday, and had NO smoke at all!! It was just like old times. Even low boost conditions from the stoplight didn't evoke any smoke.
No codes (I have a scanner) are present either while stationary or while driving.
What direction do I go now to troubleshoot?
Thanks in advance for your time.

If it does it agian you can pull your boxes (ez tst) see if it changes. If that dont help its prolly the vp acting up.

Agreed. I very seldom have the TST turned on now-days. With the 1.4 injectors, really no need.
What malfunction within the VP would cause something like this? I have approx 63,000 miles.

Could it be weather related? Hot humid days will make it smoke worse. Cooler dry air masses will clean up your smoke.

With the white smoke I'd guess a VP issue though.

What color smoke? What's your FP? last time you changed your FF?
Just hope it's not the VP44.

The thick whiteis grey smoke u saw could be caused by the wrong timing. The vp controls the injection timing electricly, so it can be a malfuntion in the circuit board giving you incorect timing and causeing smoke. The temp and humidity will cause off the line and drive smoke change but shouldnt have an affect on the white or grey smoke.

Most frustrating, this has only happened once. I think though, that it is an indicator of other things to happen.
As the signature indicates, I have a FASS (idle at 17psi; WOT at 14psi); both filters are changed annually. The FASS has been installed since 20,000 miles.
This could be weather exacerbated, but mileage has been growing poorer during the winter months.
I'm going to call Industrial Injection for some further questions.
Thanks all for the replies.
