sliding the 10 plate ahead ?

My 2nd gen has a 10 plate and 3000 rpm governor spring installed; I also added a single disk billet TC . When I put in the 10 torque plate I put it in the stock position and I see it can be slid ahead about 1.5" to full ahead . Pulling my fiver I see the pyro hit 1100 deg on a hill hard pulling a 58 mph in OD with the TC locked.

SO my question is if I slide the 10 TP ahead will my truck run to hot ?

What would sliding the plate ahead gain me ?

Will I see (feel) much difference pulling my fiver?

I have been thinking about adding 50 hp sticks also.

I will be adding the 15.5 deg timing because I read here that it makes a big difference ! ?

Yes Don....Moving the plate forward will give you more power(more fuel)...But also more fuel will equal higher EGT...

You got to get that timing set to 15.5...Now there you will see a big performance increase...And by theory...Reduce some of the EGT...

I could see you already have the 4 inch exhaust...So that's good..

Installing bigger injectors will also give more fuel and higher EGT..Your bottle neck will be your turbo..Could go with twins...Or a better single turbo...

If your starting to smoke alot of black...You may have to tweck your AFC...Maybe pull back the housing or thighten up the star screw...

Alot of trial and error...to match your fueling to the stock turbo...

I had the valves reset and that made a difference in the truck; But the Cummings guy did not want to set the timing at 15.5 deg. The bill for setting the valves was over 350$ so I did not want him to set the timing also because I bet it would cost me another 350$ . My problems is there is no one here that knows what they are doing I think and I won`t let a smooth talker that only knows the talk to work at my truck. I got 23.8 mpg at 70 mph a few weeks ago hauling my 14' cargo trailer . I`am happy with the fuel it uses and just want some more torque for towing.

I did have it on a dyno and got 322/632 . I have there print out somewhere here lol.

The only time I see much smoke is pulling under 50 mph and I put my foot in it lol. and then it is just a little haze that quickly goes away. will the 15.5 timing give me more smoke? I have never touched the star wheel .

Hey DTR guys....My memory is so bad and I don't want to steer Don in the wrong direction....

Would the the 15.5 timing reduce his smoke and EGT??I just can't remember right now...Done it so many years ago..

Bump for input..

Ha....I found it.......I knew there was a website on the pros and cons of timing...Hope this helps... ..

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/timing.htm

I think stock timing is 8 degrees...The stock specs are located on the front cover of the IP...

11-13, depending on the engine.

Thanks Guys ; I think I saw 12.5 deg where the engine number is on the plate . So i will get it set to 15.5 and more my 10 plate ahead half the distance that is left to move. I will try the star wheel also . I think I read somewhere that rotating it towards the block will lean the mixture . Is that correct ??

The thighter the star screw (towards firewall)...The more delay in fueling..So when you step on it you should find the truck to be under powered...

Looser the star screw (toward front of truck)...The less delay in fueling..

Thanks Dave; I will now have the timing set at 15.5 and then play with the star wheel to see what kind of fueling I get.
I will be up your way 2014 with my truck and fiver touring Canada for three months. I will drop you a note to see if we can get together to talk diesels . later Don

Sounds good Don.......

Here is another link with a good source of pictures etc...Give you a good idea on tuning the AFC including moving the housing forward, star screw adjustment and info on the smoke screw...

Think of the plate as a cruise control for your egts.
You either control egts with your foot or plate position, your choice.
If you're never hitting 1200 even towing uphill I would slide the plate further forward.

I just run with no plate now, have full power when you really need it, keeping an eye on the pyro of course. I've only had to back out of the throttle/downshift out of o/d while towing twice. TT is 7500, plus everything else, and it was on the same hill both times, I think a 12% grade over about a mile, speed limit is 55mph. Was convienient with a plate in the middle pos., but I like having a bit more fuel when I want it.
