single turbo with no wastegate

is there anyone that runs a single turbo with no wastegate or how would that work. i would think that it would be extremly lazy untill it lit. i was just curious if and how it would work.

No wastegate here. You are right, very slow untill spool up, then goes like heck

mine has no waste gate as well, but I tow everyday so I dont really notice the lag. and it only makes 22 psi. of boost at the maximum. I use to be able to peg my 40 lb. boost gauge with the stock turbo

With no wastegate why do you think the spool up is slow?
What you should expect, is higher heat on the top end with no wastegate to open and bypass the turbo. Also a higher drive pressure, which is bad on the head gasket.

I was told that higher boost is harder on the H.G. but I'm talking like 50 psi.

Most non WG housings are larger to allow decent airflow without a gate. Same size with and without a gate would have identical spoolup characteristics. Just make sure you have a boost gauge when running a non-gated turbo.

Wastegate, or lack of, has no effect on spoolup. The only factor affecting spoolup is the turbine wheel size and the A/R ratio of the turbine housing.
Five yrs ago, when a CTD with 400 hp was top 10%, all four of the B-1 Turbos came with no wastegates. They were built to match specific HP levels. I ran a "Kwik Spool" B-1 (KSB-1) up to 450 HP and added an external wastegate to take it up to 500+ hp. It spooled as fast as an HX-35!
These B-1's were the earlier versions of the S300 turbos from Borg Warner, so popular today.

I heard they clipped the turbines of the quickspool B-1 models and the other part was just the housing size.

The point thats being left out is that a smaller wastegated housing can spool quicker and still flow the same as a larger nongated housing.

I've had a 16cm non-wastegated housing on my truck for about 6 years now. I installed it to help cool my EGT's but I didn't really notice a difference. If I still had my stocker I might have been tempted to put it back on to see if it helped my spool at all. The 1st gen trucks all have non-gated housings from the factory. You definitely need to keep an eye on the boost gauge and regulate it with your right foot. I also swapped my compressor housing/wheel to an HX40 set up and I can make 43-45 pounds of boost if I'm not careful so I adjust my right foot according to the boost gauge.

If you ask a turbo builder, they will tell you that with two identical sized housings, the non wastegated will actually spool faster because it has smoother exhaust flow.

Wastegated housing usually have a slightly relieved sidewall to allow smoother exhaust flow out of the wastegate when it is open. When the wastegate is closed, this relieved side causes turbulence, slows exhaust velocity, and hurts spool up.

i have heard pros and cons both ways some guys like them and some guys prefer them either way, i know on my pulling tractor we run a non wastegated housing and you can lite that sucker preaty easy, which we are running alot more fuel but they are alos bigger housings.

If you are going to run a non-WG housing it has to be larger in order to control boost levels and compressor surge. A by-product of that is a little more lag. If you had two exact same housings except that one was WG'ed and one wasn't, then I could definitely see quicker spool coming from the non-WG'ed housing because of its smoother inlet. Personally, I doubt it would even be enough to make a noticeable difference though.
