SBC CON-OFE and Break-in? (How long)

For the folks with the CON-OFE, how long did you break it in for?
Just got mine today, and am still in the break-in period. I have been careful to not lug the engine and am not shifting until about 2800-3000 rpms (I usually shift earlier than that).

So far, so good, but I can't wait to romp on it. I have had my Smarty for a year and a half and have never set it to kung-fu. Soon though
I slipped the stocker over a year ago and since then have been babying the clutch through the 1800-2000 rpm range, you could feel it wanted to start slipping there. I got bigger wheels/tires a few weeks ago and the rpm range that it wanted to slip in widened out a bit, it was time to get it fixed.

I haven't noticed any rattle with it during normal operation. At shut down, there is a bit of chatter, but no big deal. I can't wait to tow with it and see how it backs my light gooseneck utility trailer.

Granted I never had a OFE, but when I was breaking in my dual disc, I just drove it normally, but easy. Just do lots of stop and go traffic so it will wear in. I don't remember anything about having to shift in the high RPMs. Supposed to do that for about 1000 miles or so. I just waited till I was on my third tank of fuel then started driving it harder.

Thanks Tate. Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods (Dallas, TX), stop and go traffic is all there is, so I got that part covered
Maybe I need to move to some new woods.

Merry Christmas to yourself!
I too always buy myself a x-mas present..... only way to be sure you get at least one thing you want!

I know you have been taking it easy for a long time to make your stocker last.... going to be like a whole new truck.

I can't remember ever hearing about the shifting at higher rpm's for break-in? Is that in the SBC recommendations?

Not really, I just think I have always shifted too early.

And you are right on the gift for yourself thing, I got what I wanted and it fits

with the big sticks if I'm accelerating I pretty much have to shift at 2200 or above... partly because it takes a bit longer to shift the dd and the sticks are easier to control with more RPM... shifting below 2200 will normally set me below 1500 which gets the lug on! cars behind don't like it much!

I am brining robs post back from the dead. So I just got my OFE in and got about 200 miles on it now and been doing the stop in go traffic thing but this puppy grabs and goes taking off in second much different than my old clutch. This puppy holds great my rpms are down too were there supoda I can shift now and it don't fall on its face on a hill also on a strange note my fuel psi is up also is that because I am not having to be on the skinny as hard to archive the same speeds as with the old slippery clutch? How long did you hold out till you hooked too your trailer rob? and how long was it tell things smoothed out and seated

I have right around 8K miles on my DD. Very nice knowing that I'm not subject to the weak(er) holding power of the stocker with DMF.

Hey Cow Boss
I have just over 1000 miles on my truck with the new clutch now and everything is great. It took a few hundred miles for 1st and 2nd to not be so grabby, but I didn't think they were too grabby to begin with. Haven't had a chance to hook to the trailer yet Been too busy. The clutch installer actually said to hook to a heavy trailer to break it in, but I choose the stop and go traffic method instead (Would have rather hooked to a heavy trailer, but mine is pretty light).
Don't know the reason for the FP increase, but your theory sounds good to me

I guess I should be more elaborate the fuel psi idling is normal but i cannot pull it down as far as before. the clutch is not "too" grabby I don't mind it at all. I got three loads of about 10k worth of old d8 tracks too haul id set a load on your trailer too help your clutch out I think I am going to at least run two tanks of diesel though before I hook too 10k
