About to get a SBC Con OFE.....
About to get a SBC Con OFE.....
Well, the funds for a new SB Con OFE are just about in and I have a few questions for yall.
1. What else should I replace when install the new clutch? I'll have everything torn out and don't want to tear it down again (piolt bearing, throw out bearing, rear main seal?) Anything else?
2. Where to get one from? Now that Wildcat is down and out, I'm not sure who to get one from.
3. Any speacial tools that I'll need? I know I'll have to have the flywheel resurfaced.
4. How long should it take? I've never done a clutch install before, just read about em. I'll have a few buddys around helping me out who have, I hope, or they will just be around drinking beer, but still available.
5. Any other pointers/ tips would be great.
Thanks for the help.

Can't help on where to get one, but changing the throwout and pilot are a great idea. Make sure you get an alinement tool with the clutch. Will also be helpful if you get some long guide pins to help slide the tranny back in place. I use long bolts that I cut the head off of. Use a good jack for the tranny, that sucker is heavy. Biggest thing is, when putting it all back together, if it feels like something is holding you from doing it, it probably is. Don't force it. Also, let the guide pins help support the tranny. If you let the input do the grunt work, you'll soon be doing the job again.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. I agree with doing the rear main seal, and I usually change the pivot ball for the fork. They seem to wear out. Also take a look at the input shaft where the pilot bearing rides. Hopefully it's still OK, but I've had to change a few.
One word of caution on it, if the last 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch seems to be hung up, do not pull it in with bolts. Get the alignnment right and it will slide in. If you pull it in you can push the pilot bearing through the flywheel which will cause another teardown. When mytruck was new, Cummins did that while replacing the #53 block.
