What's the best torque plate for me?

Hey guys,

I just wanted your opinion as to the best torque plate to install with my new-to-me 98 12 valve. It will be my first daily driver CTD. I will rarely tow my 3500lb boat. BUT, I don't want to smoke my factory tranny. How much HP can I safely add?

With out a doubt a #10 in the stock position is the best.
Your driving habits will dictate how long your tranny will last. I went over 200k on my stock tranny with a 10, but my driving style rarely involves flooring it or turning the OD on unless I'm going over 50 mph..

My advise, and this is just one opinion, upgrade the transmission (vb & t/c) and then put the power to it, or kick yourself later

Try sliding the stock plate

forward first.. BUT BEFORE YOU DO, i suggest gettin some good gauges to monitor everything.. If you still arent satisfied with the plate slid forward, try looseining the starwheel, or AFC housing as its called, and try it then, if power still aint good enough up date to the 10 plate.. Hey these are all cost free and worth a shot.. thanks!

Thanks for the replies! I like 'em. The plate sliding seems like a great idea. I know I can do that. The truck does have pyro & boost gauges now, I forgot to mention that....

The VB & t/c sound REAL EXPENSIVE. Doesn't mean it's a bad idea though....Did you have any reccommendations as to what brands to replace with? How about approx costs???

I like the quick and dirty idea about Infidels #10 plate. That's kinda the answer I was looking for.

I notice now with a strong push of the accelerator I am getting a black stream of smoke....I kinda wander how that is possible. I didn't think if everything was stock it was possible. I will be doing new exhaust next week. Maybe timing would be good....say 15.5*?

Most every 12 valve timing I've checked is too low, either it's slipped or wasn't right from the factory. Always a good idea to get it checked. 15-16° is good number.

Yeah, I finally checked my timing yesterday and it was at 10.75 , put it at 16.5 and it's like a whole new truck. I have had real good service with BD converters and valve bodies (as well as transmissions)
