RPM's

when accelerating my rig seems to fall off soon after 2grand ( u know like im losing power ). is that because of the governor ?? and if so what advantages or differences are there between the 3 and 4k gov spring kits ?? also with the use of 1 of these kits ( lets say the 3k for now ) do u actually keep pulling all the way to 3k or do u still fall off? if u keep pulling i bet that turbo sounds awesome. is it ok to use one of these kits while still stock??
thanks guys,scott

Scott:

It sounds to me like your governor is working just
about like it should. When my truck was "stock"
it would pull a little past where yours does then
start "falling off" as you describe. This is just
the action of the pump/governor beginning to
shut fuel off to the engine as per the setting/
parameters of where the P7100 has been set.

I just changed from the 3K to 4K governor spring kit
and can tell you that the difference is very noticeable!
I have a automatic transmission. If I "manually" start
out in first gear and let the engine rev up it will go all
the way to 3800 RPM, I will then shift to second and
it will do the same thing and continue that action
until I get up to 4th gear (O.D.). By just putting
the truck in "Drive" and flooring it, the engine will
pull hard to about 3200-3300 RPM and then shift
into the next gear until it hits 4th gear (O.D.).

I have noticed that the 4K springs have really
helped my "bottom end" acceleration! I know I
am getting more fuel now because the smoke is
worse than it was before! Not that I mind that! ;D

Anyway, I hope this has helped you some!

-------
John_P

The 3K kit improves throttle response too (maybe not quite as much as the 4K). I don't know that the turbo sound will be predominately noticeable, it will be there, but the exhaust and engine sounds are most noticeable.

John P.-

Wow, I can only imagine what your manual shifts are like at 3,800!!!
I thought mine was launching pretty good when I go through the gears at 2,700-3,000.

Vin:

Yeah, the first time I did it "manually" I had that same
look on my face!! But,.....if you have ever watched
that old "BD" video of Piers doing his burnouts and "donuts"
with his old truck, and the tach "pegged" on 4,000 RPM
I guess mine will be O.K.!!

These Cummins 5.9 engines are just amazing to me! ;D

--------
John_P

Re:RPM's

Scott,

For me the decision to go with the 3K kit was based on several factors-
 • Not having to change the valve springs on the exhaust (I hear the rear two cylinders are somewhat difficult).
 • I felt uncomfortable with the idea of spinning such a heavy rotating mass much past the "factory redline" on the tach (but it seems other members have not found it to be a problem).
 • I didn't see any real benefit to the higher rpm since my auto was shifting at about 2500 WOT at the time.
(Interestingly, my full throttle shifts went up about 200 or so rpm when I put in the 370s. [More pressure from the TC, I think] Then I hear of shifts like John P described, and it makes me go Hmmm...)

Yes, the kit comes with a good set of instructions for going in through the side. I felt it was easier to go in through the top (under the fuel plate). In addition to the height measuring mentioned, you can also count the "clicks" of the retainer nuts. It doesn't take much to turn the nuts, though I now have a modified (notch in the middle) wide screwdriver tip just for this purpose.

Re:RPM's

Bryan,

We're actually discussing both- with the 3,000 rpm governor spring kit, you don't have to change the exhaust valve springs. The 4,000 rpm kit includes the ex. springs so you don't float the valves at the higher rpm.

Valve floating is bad.

Re:RPM's

"Vin" is right, you need to have the 60lb. valve springs
for the 4K gov. spring kit. I already had installed those
when Scheid Diesel fixed my blown head gasket last
year! ;D

The 4K spring kit is great! As I said earlier, it has really
helped my bottom end and I have gained some top end
speed too!!!

-------
John_P
