I love my truck and it's in great shape. only complaint is the 4:10. have been considering everthing from putting on 35's to a gear vendors to re gearing. I know to regear the carrier also has to be changed. Could somone give me a ball park on the price of re gearing (labor and parts) im not sold on the gear vendor and dont want more power loss through the drive train. and I dont really like the look of 35's

 

I would say just from a couple quotes I got and from what some of my buddies have paid..........I'd say anywhere between $1,200.00 to $1,500.00 for parts and install.......could be more could be less depending on who you have do it. All I know is it's not cheap!!!!!!

I got a quote from a place that specializes in gears. They wanted $2,100 for parts and labor. The quote was high because I have a D80 rear axle and would have to replace the carrier for the 3:55’s. I think that there was $700 in labor in the quote.

 

On a 2001 HO 1 ton with a NV5600 with 4.10's I believe we have a D80 rear axle, what front axle would the truck have.

The best price I found new was (all DANA components)
Dana 80 LSD $725
3.55 gear set $380

That was for my 2wd. Not sure about the D60 costs. I wanted 3.31 gears but that is a Dana only product and they charge extra for that. $685 for gear set. Both gearsets come with the Master install kit which runs about $150 by itself. I found a deal and got and a new open carrier and gear set for $300. I bought an LSD carrier that "WAS" 3.54 and turned out to be exactly what I pulled out of my truck. Fortunatly I had the open on hand so that is what went in for now. Someday the 97 will get a locker and I'll use that LSD.

i have a 01 drw 4x4 and i would love to change out the 4:10's.

 

Ive got the 4.10's too.. not much you can do. You can upgrade to 17" rims with 315's to buy you back some of that top end. You could use a gear splitter or re-gear the front and rear diff's. Cheapest Ive seen the ring and pinion sets is like 300 each and youd need two plus the bearings and shims and all that.
you could install them yourself with the right tools. Youd need a case spreader, some of that dye thats used to set the mesh pattern and a dial indicator with magnetic base. Wouldnt be easy though. Ive never done it but the write-ups make it look like something I could do if I had another truck for a week.

 

My truck was born with 4.10's. Much better truck with the 3.55's I put in, although a 3.7 would be sweet if it's available.

 

I have a almost new LSD for the Dana 60 front end, 3.54 gears, for sale, if that will make your gear swap easier.

 

I searched and searched for gear options for my truck ( I have 4.10's also )

The 2 most affordable options I came up with is http://www.drivetrain.com They quoted me about $1150.00 for parts. That included 3.54 ring and pinon for D60 & D80, standard install kits (no bearings) and a new powerlock carrier (to replace the traclock) and believe it or not that was all for Dana/Spicer parts.

Next option I found recently is there is several gear manufactures now making a thin 3.73 that will fit on the 4.10 carrier. I never got a firm quote but by adding up prices off http://www.ring-pinion.com/ and they added up to about $650.00

I don't remember how much install would be because I only priced it once a long time ago, then decided if I ever did change I would get the tools and do it myself. But if my memory serves me correct it was like $600 to $800

Now one final option (which is what I am doing next weekend) is to find someone to swap axles with. I found a guy that has a nice shop to do the work in and lives about a days drive from me that wants 4.10's. we are splitting the gas for me to drive out there next weekend so we can just swap the entire axle assemblies (alot less work this way)

If I were you I would keep your eyes open in the clasified's on DTR and TDR, also make an add your self. If that doesn't work, and you can live with 3.73's then get the thin gears and keep your traclock then maybe run some taller tires. Those are probably about the absolute best prices you will find. I spent countless hours on the phone and in local shops looking for an affordable option, and the only one I came up with was to swap with someone.
