Quick Timing Question

im just curious what to expect with advanced timing, im going to set it at 16, i would like to know if the truck is harder to start, runs rougher at idle, smokes at idle, laggy on the bottom end, cause my truck to over heat, or any not so good symptoms, reason i ask is the shop that did it wrong last time wont do a refund so im just going to have them do it again, i just want to make sure that this time it runs the way it should at that timing setting, thanks

It depends on how far you go. Timing is one of those things where's NOT the case that if some is good, more is better.

Most people I'd say are safe up to 16.5°-- I'd consult with a 12V expert before going farther than that. Some pumps can handle or need more timing than others...

YMMV

you should be all set at 16.. i am roughly around 20* which is too much for my stock pump/ injector combo, my truck popps around 1700... starts are the same, except in winter, it will run on one cylinder for a little and slowly catch the rest... but other than that it helps wake up the truck and allow it to run real nice...

16* will run and start just like stock with a tid bit of timing rattle (sounds really cool!) and have more kick on the topend before falling on its face. BUT you have a 160 pump right? If you do they can/need more timing, my bud JKM is at 18*-18.5* with his 160 and as far as I know he likes it alot... Might try to PM him.

thanks guys, i am also curious to know if the water temps run hotter, a shop is redoing the timing on my truck so if it smoke and idles rough and starts hard i'll know that its not timed right and i'll have them redo it. im getting the timing tools eventually but this shop owes me, so now i know what to expect from setting the timing like that.

With my timing at 18* I can't tell any difference in "hard starting" over where it was at previously in warm weather. As far as water temps my truck never overheated or got uncomfortably warm while towing before I bumped my timing, and just a week ago I was towing 15k and they would go to 195* and drop right back down at very spaced intervals (wasn't constantly going up and down) so IMO didn't make it run any hotter. The only downside is the higher you go the less bottem end you have, daily driving is just fine but starting off up a small incline was not very fun with 15k lol.
