Quick ? about VP guage install...

Sorry for such a newbie ? but couldn't find anything under the search.

I know I need one IMMEDIATELY from reading this forum but need some help with the guage.
Where is the easiest/ best place to tap in to fuel system?
Which way to go, Mechanical or electric?
I seen mid/low teens is a good high pressure # so should I get a 15# one or would 30# make more sense(for future FP upgrade?).

THX for the help.

A lot folks buy a kit with larger fuel lines from the filter housing to the VP44. Some of these kits have a fitting for tapping in the gage. On my '99, it came with a fitting that went in the outlet side plug on top of the fuel filter housing. Go to the "LINKS" above and check some of the vendors.
Mechanical or electric? You'll find a lot of opinions on this. I think most prefer mechanical, but you have to be sure of a good install to make sure you don't have diesel leaking into the cab.
Go with the 30 psi gage. A 15 would have worked for me, until I install the FASS system. Now, I idle at 18 and never go below 14.

I hope this helps...............

You should be able to find lots of info about fuel pressure gauges on this site. I think you will be happier with the 30 psi fuel guage. This is what I have and I see 14 psi idle, 13 psi going down the freeway and 11 psi wot with my setup. When my lift pump fails again, I am going with the 95 gph fass pump adjusted down to 16 psi.

Where to hook it up? You can buy a new banjo with the 1/8th npt tapped port and install it on filtered side of your fuel filter. This is real easy to do and some places include this in a kit.

If you go mechanical, you will probly want an isolator also. Some folks just run the SS fuel line to their fuel gauge. Some say the electrical sender fail often.

HTHs,

Joe

Your 98 has two test ports on top of the fuel filter canister. While looking at the canister from over the driver's side fender, it is the test port on the left that will give you post filter. Plumb a gauge in there and you'll be set. Post filter will allow you to know when your filter is getting dirty ... the pressure begins to drop.

Good luck!

Good info all around but on top of the filter sounds good to me. THX
