Question about my comp, and running hard
Ok guys, I'm wondering how often you guys with comps are laying your foot to the floor in terms of hauling butt. Over the past couple of days, I have found myself really getting into it and running the heck out of this truck, with no ability to control myself. My discipline is completely gone, and I've been running it hard.
I'm just curious how long you think it'll last before my truck explodes? How hard can you run these things and how often? By the way, the tranny seems to be holding up fine, my boost pressure sometimes pegs at more than 35 psi. I can't tell how high it's getting because the gauge pegs on the stops. Should I be concerned here, or am I okay?
EGT's with the Scotty II seem to be around 1100 when hammering it. Doesn't really get any hotter than that usually.
Fuel pressure WOT on level 5 is about 5-7 PSI depending on the conditions. Boost goes down with heat and humidity it seems.
Let me know what you think.
Jack

Ahh,,,Grasshopper. Commit this ancient saying to memory and you will understand. "The candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long."

Do you still have the stock turbo? If so drop it down to around 32psi. Anymore than that is a waste. Fuel pressure could be better but I am the wrong person to ask about that. When I race the fuel pressure goes to 0.

How would I get it down to 32? If I run on level 4, it'll stay right around 30, but level 5 absolutely pegs the gauge into oblivion. It hauls butt though. I have no self-control right now. Maybe it's the euphoria, and it'll wear off. I have to be careful
Re:Question about my comp, and running hard
It will wear off. ;D How are you controlling the wastegate on your turbo? If your using a turnbuckle, just loosen the turnbuckle some. If your using a boost elbow, you might need one with a sightly larger hole. As for the FP, anything below 8 psi warrants a replacement. You've gone through one VP-44 and you had a warranty. You don't have a warranty anymore. So I would suggest getting a fuel pump that can supply you with at least 8 psi at WOT if not more. My Holley Black gets me 13 at WOT with the pump wire hooked up (before I slipped my TC) and about 16-18 at idle. You may try larger fuel lines from the filter outlet to the VP-44 and maybe some larger banko bolts.

The harder you run 'er, the shorter the life, Jack. Keep in mind, though, that you're really not pushing that engine all that hard with the Comp box, and you can likely run all day long at 2700 RPM, on 5x5, and not hurt your engine's longevity all that much. Constantly running the engine up to redline and then backing off will do more damage than simply running 'er up and keeping 'er there. With the Comp, and constantly running hard, you're likely taking your 500,000 mile engine, and reducing it to a 400,000 mile engine. With good maintenance procedures, and good oils, you're going to be just fine.

On the boost front, since you finally were a man and drilled the hole, you can run your HY35 up to 34 - 38 PSI before you fall off the map. The Scotty is giving you a little extra boost to play with. I'd buy one of the adjustable hooks, and then tune the max boost:

1) Do a full throttle run and set the boost to 32 PSI.
2) Keep doing full throttle runs, increasing the boost 1 PSI and watch the EGTs. As boost level goes up, EGTs should drop a hair. Do not exceed 38 PSI. When you get to a boost level that the EGTs start to rise again, you're well out of the map, and you should drop about 2 PSI off your peak boost.

This is not a proper way of setting the turbo up, but it is a good rule of thumb approach, and doesn't require IAT sensors to determine compressor heat.

On the fuel pressure side, I don't remember what your pusher assembly looks like, but I don't think it addressed the line run from the lift pump to the VP44 (or did it?) If it didn't, get those stock line off of there. Replacement of those lines is FAR more important than pushers or replacement of the line from the fuel tank to the lift pump.

Rod

Jack,

If you have a 2001 or newer then you have the HY35 with the hardline wastegate and I would assume you are using the turnbuckle method. I think its a bad idea to lock the wastegate on the smaller turbos. If you don't want to experiment with the spring and wire trick that I used then call Turbomaster.

If you have a 2000 or older truck than you have an HX35 and should be using a bleed orifice elbow. Some of those elbows are adjustable.

It does wear off and your truck will seem like a slug. Then you will want injectors, and bigger turbo, and on, and on, and on. Its a disease.

Jack has a 99 with a HX-35 turbo, with my 00 my boost climbs fast, the shift to 3rd at WOT buries the guage and then ease's back to around 32psi. I dog mine all day evry day witht he Comp and have had no problems, as long as all the guages look good just go after it.

Re:Question about my comp, and running hard
on the hy35x9 turbos you can get a boost control jet from banks that goes inside the little steel tube on the vacum pod between the pod & housing.this thing looks like a main jet in a carb & you can get them in differant sizes for differant boost pressures.i had one in my 01 set at 38 psi & it looks alot better than the goofy j hook cluster ----.you have to take the little vacum pod off & tap the steel tube & the jet just threads in the end of it.when you order the jet from banks they ask you what psi you want & they send you a tap with the jet.this works real slick for the guys with the hys that dont like the turnbuckle/j hook pos.this is the only thing i ever bought from banks.hey rod the dom m injectors are awesome they run smooth as a mouses ear.
only one problem i have to buy a new fuel system i can pull my fuel pressure to 0psi with these new multi hole shower heads. ;D see ya kurt.

Re:Question about my comp, and running hard
I've got my HY clamped off. Have had it that way for a year now. Everything is just as tight as it was from the factory. No play in the shaft at all. No cracks anywhere. It's nice and solid. I'm only pushing 30 psi right now (have the turnbuckle a little loose) though.
