Performance Questions (new guy)

Hello I am pretty new to the forum, and the diesel truck world. I have a 1998 24v quad dually. I was thinking about tunning it up and was wondering what is my best bet. It has 233,000 miles on it. I thought about exhaust and a programer. Is that to many miles to crank it up a whole lot? The truck has a new injector pump. Thanks for your help. Shaun

get a pusher pump or aftermarket fuel system. the stock lift pumps go bad too often to risk your new injector pump. the FASS is what i have but there are lots of good options. also add a fuel pressure gauge with it.

exhaust, opening up the air intake, and a tuner are a great start...but beware, too much power and the tranny or clutch will boom, unless you upgrade it as well

FIRST mod on a 24v is a fuel pressure gauge and egt gauge. The stock exhaust is good to about 300 hp so unless you just want loud it's good to go. intake is money better spent BHAF around $40 (do a search) then a smarty programmer is the best (IMO) (do a search on that also) it will really wake the truck up. much passed that it might get to the tranny (or clutch) , But if you want to spend some money let us know, were good at that

More details

Auto or 5 speed?

Rebuilt tranny or new clutch?

Also, it wouldn't hurt to get the valves adjusted. I think they recommend it every 100k.

Stock auto won't take much more then a Van Aaaken or EDGE EZ. I really liked the VA that I had.

5 speed will take a little more, like the Smarty or Juice/Comp/TST on 3 or so(100 hp or so). If the clutch is tired it won't last long though.

4" exhaust(like Rips) is great upgrade($270-300). An air intake, like Scotty or AFE is a good upgrade.

Thanks for all your help guys. My truck is a 5 speed, and it already stratchs a bit when you shift it up into third. I think I am giong to do the 4 in exhaust, holley blue inline, and a edge chip. Are there any free mods I can do?

I have the same issue with 3rd. I always double clutch it.

No free mods for a 24v, sorry.

Depending upon your budget, best money will be spent on a used EZ or VA box. Boxes, turbos, and injectors will yeild the most performance bang for the buck.

On a 24v, the stock exhaust system only looses 4-5 hp to a 4" after market system at the 400 hp level. The stock air cleaner is good to around 500 hp, with just a couple of hp loss, when the rubber snorkle is removed.

If you're on a tight budget, don't get sucked into the smoke and mirrors of exhaust and intake modifications for power increases and egt decreases. For the same price of a 4" exhaust system and an after market intake, you can buy a used EZ, have your stock turbo modidifed to a 35-40 hybrid, and be light years ahaed in performance and egt control, with money left over in your pocket for the guages and clutch you'll need.

I agree with Bart.......save your money right now and don't do the exhaust.....if you want some sound cut the muffler off. The price you spend on exhaust will buy you a lot of other things.

Depending on how much power you are looking for.......I'd say invest in the SMARTY programmer first. It will make your truck come alive like you wouldn't believe and will still be easy on your injector pump, where as other performance boxes ( well minus the Edge EZ ) tap the wire on the injector pump....

And the rest depends on how much money you are looking to spend......

Don't worry too much about the mileage. As long as the engine has been maintained pretty well it will be fine as long as you're not going crazy with the mods.

I'd definitely reccomend the smarty as the second thing to do (first being gauges). I had (still have) the Drag comp, and it was good, but the Smarty makes the truck feel quite a bit snappier. Your clutch should survive. Mine is just starting to give up, and thats with a set of 80 hp sticks and a HRVP.
