I believe that this is due to the 5th gear nut backing off.... Sorry, I've got an auto. Try a search for "5th gear nut" and there should be a good many threads to help you get that fixed.

Others will chime in too.

And this is a good write up with pics. on how to do yourself.

so yal think thats what it is? um if i push my shifter al the way to the right in 5th, the grinding kinda noise stops. also how hard, and would it be worth it, swapping in a 6-speed? or am i better off just rebuilding my 5-speed? my truck has 275k on it and i plan to build it to 500+ hp. how much longer do you think my "old" transmission will hold up? i am not particularly nice to it. lol

i would stay with the 5-speed. the 6-speeds are alot more expensive to fix and it is harder to find parts for them. you can fix the 5th gear without taking the tranny out if you just get the updated nut. its not the "best" option but it works and it is around 100 bucks from the dealer. i made my own "wrench/socket" for the new nut and if you put the tranny in reverse when you are doing it you dont need the other special socket to go on the end of the shaft.

it sounds like it to me but it is hard to be certain unless your 5th gear goes out or you take it apart.

I'm not, mine is out and it doesn't make a sound.......But you won't know for sure until you get the tailhousing off.

When mine went it didn't make a sound. Tranny was working perfectly until driving along with the cruise on it just revved up. It took me about 10 seconds to figure out what was up, I thought it just popped out of gear.
