Unhappy The dreaded NV4500 5th gear syndrome

I have a friend in the Pacific Northwest who just lost 5th gear on a 97 CTD. Does anyone from that area know a reputable shop to get it fixed? He was quoted $1450 for a new full spline install with gear, bearings, and labor. Is it just me or does that seem a bit high?
Is there a NWBomber anywhere who can help?

TIA

That does seem like an awful lot of money, myself I'd be tempted to drop the tranny and tack weld a couple spots from the nut to the shaft. I haven't read into this very much but I've heard of several people using this method sucessfully, where as I hear mention of the improved nut not really being better. None the less I'd favor the previously mentioned methods over $1450 for a new splined shaft.

I got the new 5th gear nut from the dealer for $43. I just bought 2nd,3rd,4th,cluster gear and syncros, bearings and seals for $538. Yes I think that is alittle high.

I understand the "improved" nut from the dealer runs around $50, but from what I hear, that usually only fixes the problem for another 20K miles. Tacking the nut might be a fix, but he'll have to pull the tranny and that assumes once he does, there's no problem with his old 5th gear. From what I have gathered on this board, sometimes when the nut falls off, there's some damage to the gears.
Anyone else have an input? He wants to get this done by the weekend.

you can do the 5th gear nut without pulling the tranny... jack the tail of the tranny up, remove the crossmember, let the tranny hang down, remove the tailhousing, and it's right there in front of you.

I am thinking about sending my transmission to Standard Transmission in Fort Worth, TX. I said they could rebuild my tranny with new fully splined mainshaft, new bearings, seals, the whole works for about $800. But right now, I just drive the truck with 4 grears before I figure out what to do.

The new nut works pretty good. I have installed several, and only saw one back off once. I have actually seen more than one tacked nut fail however.
