Im not sure about the 3rd gen turbo.

But, what kinda boost you seein with your HX-35 currently?
You could do a HX-35/40 hybrid. Cheap and cost efficient. Builds a solid 45 lbs. Little more if you have the fueling for it. Coarse head studs is a good choice if your playin around 45 lbs of boost.

I am running a 3rd gen, the only problem I have is the higher egts, the spool up is pretty nice. I am running about 30 psi of boost, pretty much stock injectors too.

Have considered twins ? Solves alot of problems, will deliver you plenty of air, spool up is better, towing is great. You will need to o-ring the head and add a good exhaust manifold, and fuel plate. You seem to have everything else already.

twins and o ringing the head to most people dont fall into the same sentence with cheap

Used HX40 can be found for 4-$500 you will need a diff downpipe though

I just done upgrading my turbo to the 3rd gen he351. I am still tweaking it but at the higher rpm's it seems to cool very good. If I can get up to cruising speed of about 70 and hit an incline it will not go above 1200 deg. Mid range it run a little warmer. I am only in the whole mod maby 350-400$. So i think it was a good mod. Big blue has some good write ups on the mod do a search. I am still trying to tweak the waist gate also so I can get more boost. I can only get about 28psi right now. This high elevation kills yea.

What would happen if you shut the waste gate off completely. How much boost would you get, how much would the head handle ? What would happen to your temps then ?

Young guns check these out. Might give you some answeres on the hybrid idea..

http://htturbo.com/cu.htm

http://www.gillettdiesel.com/HXUpgra...0mm8blade.aspx

Gillett is local to me and Ive gone to them many dif times for lots of things and they do real good work.
Tell em Ian Dyksman sent ya if you talk to em,

HTT is a good name brand as well, but IMO tend to be more $ for everything.

Hope this helps,
Ian
