anybody heard of moving turbo next to tailpipe?

I saw this on some sat. morning car show. I think they said some japanese car company was starting to put the turbo next to the tailpipe. There were also a few of the guys the hotrod the little import cars that had done it. They said it dramatically lowered the temp. of the turbo since it was out in the open air instead of under the hood. Has anyone here ever done or heard of it being done? What might the pros and cons be?

closer to the collector of the manifold the better, exhaust energy is what drives the turbine. Energy is flow velocity and heat. A turbo will run for many many miles given enough clean, cool oil without any high temp shutdowns. No need to move it away unless space is a factor

Seems like those living in the rust belt would be begging for something bad to happen to your oil lines too, having to run that far underneath the vehicle. Kinda puts me in mind of the rear A/C set ups on Suburbans, how they get the leaks and such from the lines under the vehicle.

Not real familiar with gasser turbos but aren't a lot of them powered by an electric motor where exhaust pressure and heat don't matter?

I saw this on 2 guy's garage a long time ago, I think it was on a newer camero, the turbo was by the rear tires. That's all I can remember.

gassers have much higher etg's than diesels do.....maybe that is why they're talkin'
I wouldn't think it would be a good idea anyway....you get less power from your exhaust and then your turbo has to pump that air back up to your engine. wouldn't be as effiecent.

Remote mounting turbos is usually only for space issues. Where you cant fit a turbo, and cant route the intake/exhaust/intercooler tubing.

Not only that, but it doesnt require tearing apart the engine. easier to "bolt on" so to speak.. no special exhaust manifold needed, no extra heat shielding underhood, no tearing your engine half apart to replace the manifold, etc.

Just so no one calls anyone silly.....to date there has never been a electric turbo that comes close to working it would take at least a 25 HP motor to do it..........the stuff you see advertized on Ebay etc is a scam.......do the math/cant work

Ram 1500 Hemi Double Cab, Standard Cab - A LOT MSRP

Performance Results

Boost: 7 psi
Rear Wheel Horsepower: 417
%'d increase: 59%

Rear Wheel Torque: 460
%'d increase: 62%

For that price we can buy twins and a box of choice and have 150 horse and nearly three times the torque. And still be able to afford stoolbucks.

A while ago I saw that exact setup (turbo right before the muffler) on a turboed V8 Camaro (maybe www.thirdgen.org ?), the pics have to be on the net somewhere. From what I read lag wasn't as big an issue as they thought it would be and EGTs were pretty low. I think that proper sizing has a lot to do with it though.
