Map/Dome light mod

I found some blue xenon 5W 194's this weekend, actually stumbled across them at WallyWorld, stuck them in the map and dome lights, they are a bit dimmer, but they look pretty cool, and not as harsh as that bright white but instead a softer blueish light. The book calls for PC194's, they are quite a bit larger bulb but the base is the same, so i couldn't resist trying them anyhows, but they'll stay for a while.

Ultimately I want to replace them with a bundle of blue LED's and regulator on a small pc boards that will fit in the space of the little compartments... I picked up a few hundred 3600mcp (super bright) blue LED's to play with a while back.

Anyone already try this, or am i just a blue LED freak?

nine led's in series hook up directly to a 12 v system, no resisters or regulators needed. If you want to be a little easy on them, make it ten.

I did the same thing that you did. I'm not too happy with the brightness. Blue? My truck looks like a blue blur going down the road

Nope. Not quite anyhows... but you should see my home office/server room... picture the light from over a dozen puters that have nothing but super bright blue LED's glowing, add a few blue neon tubes here and there.... who needs white light?

rattle_rattle - thats about the look i'm going for!

Haulin_in_Dixie - Nine LED's in series on a 12v line? they'd never light up... voltage drop is 3.3v @30ma across each... three parallel runs of 4 in series *might* do without a resistor, gotta do the math, but the first surge from the grid heater cycling would probably hose it all up and let all the smoke out.

So is there any downside to using the 5W 194's from wallyworld?

I like the blue theme as well. My amp, capicitor, bass remote and head unit all have blue L.E.D.'s.

If you really want to go blue, get the autometer cobalt series gauges, look real good at night

Can't hurt anything, they may not draw quite as much current as the larger PC194's is all, I haven't taken the time to look up with wattage of the originals, or stick a meter between them (too lazy), but i'd guess they are around 10w, the voltage is the same just lower amperage provided the efficiency is about the same (blame Kirchoff), if so and you look at it just right then you are actually *saving* HP.

The worst part of it is they run $5 for a pair of them (seems high even for wallyworld)

Jeff,

I REALLY wanted the Cobalt gauges but they didn't have a fuel pressure gauge in that series. As for the 5W 194's, they just aren't bright enough.

When I did my gauges I booted them with green to try and match the dash color, but I will admit I was already thinking a nice indigo or cool blue for the gauges, dash, and controls would look pretty nice in there
