Lost motor last night.

The rings when out last night in my motor, and then caused a chain reaction which also blew a fire ringed headgasket. i need some ideas on a new build setup. Pistons, rings, cam and such. I have heard of a sure seal ring. Has anyone had experience with these. I Probaly wont build it back until later on in the year. Just trying to get some ideas on what to go back with. I dont plan on going farther than a 2.8 class any time soon. But for now im running the 2.5 turbo class. So the build doesnt have to be anything crazy.

Are you looking to lower compression?

I know Ross Racing pistons is starting to get into the diesel piston biz, and you might get lighter pistons from them. Then there's the Venolia and Arias pistons lots of guys are running. There's also the RV275 pistons that have a factory coating on the skirts.

If it was me, I'd go with the Ross units, with coatings from www.swain-tech.com

Then I'd ring it with Total Seal rings if they make the right size. Ross can probably make a piston with narrower ring groves to use an off-the-shelf 1/16" ring or even a .043 ring if you want really thing.

Anyway, you might be able to shave the crank weights a bit with the lighter pistons and have an engine that revs a hits a little quicker.

I have no experience with any of this stuff-- I'm just talking off my head.

You'd be best advised to contact one of puller guys on here, like PourinDiesel.

I've heard of stories of TS rings not liking boosted applications.

Thats some detailed advice for someone with no experience with this stuff
Sounds good- but WC needs to read your disclaimer =P

I have nothing to offer Mr WC, but am curious to how that stage 2 vp44 is working out for you and am curious if you've ever dynoed? Idle like an angry tractor?

I know of one that didn't like them at all!!! You know who I'm talking about Will.

Goldielocks ring a bell?

Nor did it like the Arias pistons. You won't either unless you plan on making that a dedicated puller. No more daily driving with those. Not to mention 3-4 weeks after the crank was lightened it broke. Just a few things I thought I'd bring to your attention before you went into something too fast.

Are the Arias units really low compression? What makes them unstreetable?

I've always heard good things about the factory Cummins RV pistons that are already coated.

Really low compression = poor street manners, lots of smoke down low.

Dont go buy one just yet. They forget to tell you when you buy it that it is a hit and miss investment. You might get two bad ones but once you get a good one they make some crazy power. Havent had the best of luck with mine. i dynoed at scheid and it was 436 with all my boxes on.( I even tried adjusting them but it made now difference. I then turned the redline off and it gained 60 hp. The idle is crazy though sounds like a scheid vp on steroids. I dont know if the rings was causing a problem then or not. Hard to tell.

set of factory common rail pistons shaved .060 and coated in tcb, and pc9 (i run those coatings on my pistons as does george peterson) from swain

a kta camshaft, common rail lifters, balanced rotating assembley, bed plate (girdle), viscous dampner, the good 24v vavle train (springs, retainers, keepers, bridges)

factory rings, the total seals have a short life on the street.
that would about round out the motor

if you need a shop to do the work you can pm me. I can get all the parts, and or do the labor.
