The VP-44 is a fuel injection pump. An injection pump is timed to the position of the crank and camshaft. It will pump fuel to each injector in relation to the before mentioned items. The VP-44 is electronically controlled where as the older P-7100 and others are mechaniclly controlled.

Yes and no. The VP-44 sends the fuel to each injector, which flows into each cylinder according to timing. With a CP-3, it just sends a massive amount of fuel to a common fuel rail which charges all the injectors. The injectors via electronic timing are what controls the flow of fuel to each cylinder. If your VP-44 is heathy, a good fuel box module is really all you need. Or you can get a Hot Rod VP-44.

There is not really any proven upgrades that are better than the SO VP. Machining tolerances are too tight by Bosch on the VP44 to improve flow dependably. Basically the VP44 cannot be upgraded like the CP3 can because it does more things that CP3 does and it is not a simple. There is a Hot Rod VP44 that has some benefits, though some claim it to be quirky. I believe it can be a benefit to HO trucks, however it doesn't seem like the SO trucks experience as much of a power increase. It is basically a hybrid using the benefits of the SO and HO VP44's. Many also have good experience by just replacing their HO VP44 on their HO trucks with a SO VP44 with good results and less out of pocket than a Hot Rod VP44, aka HRVP.
You can get a combination of a timing and or fueling module for the VP44 that will handle most performance needs. You will have to make sure you have a good solid system for your lift pump so that your VP44 doesn't get starved for fuel which is fuel cooled. This is the #1 reason for VP failures.
Hope that helps some.

A FASS (fuel air seperator system....I think) is a lift pump or fuel pump where a VP44 is an injection pump. The FASS is a solid system and will protect your VP44 by supplying it with fuel. I think they are in the neighborhood of $600. A new VP44 will run from $1000 to $1500 or more plus your core charge.
