Re:K & N Airfilter

It sure looks like the Pro-GUARD 7 is the best filter yet. If it flows 95% as much air as the old version but stops 99% of the dirt, I want one. Where is the best place to buy one? I couldn't find any mention on Geno's site, maybe they just haven't got around to adding it.

Compression numbers eh????

Well my 89 CTD had 278,000 miles.. Compression numbers If I can recall when I sold it were all over the 380 Psi mark, which is only 20 psi lower than BRAND NEW.... Now I cannot post a sheet as all the paper went with the truck when I sold it. The truck had about 60,000 on it when I bought it and the K&N.

Not really conclusive whether it was good or bad huh? :-

Re:K & N Airfilter

Look at the filter system from a 89 compared to that of a 2nd gen. If anything the older filter system was overkill, the main K&N problem comes into play with the poor sealing of the K&N in the square box of an intake in the 2nd gen trucks. The old canister type systems have always been easier to seal and more effective in stoping dirt because of this. This is just my opinion.

I think just about everyone will agree that the stock airbox in the second gens is terrible.

Yup.
1 vote for terrible.
I don't see how they ever thought it would seal well.

Tiny little air inlet for a turbo'd motor?
Not an engineer, but I would think you'd want the inlet at least as big as the inlet to the turbo.
And that's only at idle.
Once it starts pumping air, you'd want a bigger inlet.

I think that's what it is.
I just handed the template over to a guy here at work that does metal work and let him have at it.

The only thing I did with it was drill the holes to mount it under the hood (even fudged that up a bit )

Re:K & N Airfilter

You're right about the box. The opening on mine has been enlarged, but when I changed the filter Sunday I discovered that the last time it was changed (not by me) a corner of the old filter had gotten damaged and the inside of the box (post-filter) and the hose to the turbo were filthy. I hate to think how much crud my engine has eaten since it was changed two months ago. The box has to go. The ultimate solution should include getting cold outside air. There is a reason big trucks have the filter outside the hood, often with a ram scoop. Some sort of scoop with the proper plumbing and an AFE Pro-GUARD 7 in some sort of sensible box (Scotty?) would seem to be near ideal.
