Another airfilter forum (RE: BHAF vs. K&N)
I was just reading the BHAF replacement thread, and definatly like the logitivity of the BHAF, but what are the power diffrences between the K&N and the BHAF? Commensense tells me the BHAF flows better, but needs a custom fabbed shield to block the heat, wheras the K&N fitts in the stock box. I don't see how a shield blocks that much heat as the intake pulls air in hard. But, I also don't understand the theory that rhe intake tempature will affect power when the ehaust going back into the turbo could be 600- 700 degrees hotter. I read in another thread that the temp is effected by close to 300%, but I don't understand this theory.
Anyway, I am trying to make up my mind between the two, as I cannot afford a scotty, which would satisfy the temp problem.

The actual heat difference between outside/underhood air at freeway speeds has been consistently shown to be 20 degrees or less - hardly enough to get our undies in a knot over...
;D
Folks somehow have this illusion that there's this GREAT heat buildup of underhood temps - and that's possible at slow speed or when you stop the truck and then lift the hood - but at speed and down the road - nope!

As to airflow, my own view is that up to 300 HP or so - the addition of an Edge Comp - the K&N wiil work just fine, drilling the stock airbox to remove restriction is a plus there... I've done that with my setup, no problems of any kind - boost is at 32+ PSI towing in the hills, filter minder still sitting at bottom of travel after 10,000 miles use - great oil analysis in regards to silicon level...
NOW, if I was going further into bombing, the BHAF would be my next addition - excellent airflow, and filtering as good as or better than the K&N...

Exaclty what Gary said. When your crusing down the road air is being force into the engine bay and force into the intercooler and such. And as you know with that air being force into there in return it cools. I think thats why dogs stick thier heads out the winders. :P
