Injectors 101

I am looking to do bigger injectors and I need some help. What will I need for tools? How much time will I need? Can anyone give me a description of the process or point me to a set of instruction? Also can someone give me a breakdown of the parts of the injector itself? I know that this is asking a great deal but I am sure that others could use this info to help make their decisions on whether or not to "try this at home".

Thanks in advance,
Tengu

This should give you just about everything you need:http://www.lib.uaa.alaska.edu/~tibor...structions.pdf

Only thing missing is on step 18 when tightening the injector line retaining nuts which need to be torqued to 28 ft/lbs.

Good luck, Matt

excellent instructions. if this is your first time, give it a couple hours if you're mechanically inclined. if not, double that and have a mechanically inclined friend on hand!

Thanks! That is a great set of instructions. On another thread I asked about the Nozzels. If I do the Jammer nozzels how does the process differ?

Only difference with the nozzles is that you need to swap the nozzles on to the injector bodies. It's also a good idea to have them pop tested and shimmed.

O.K. next question: With my truck (mostly stock) which Jammers should I use 1-5 and how much smoke will I have to deal with. Keep in mind that next spring I will get the Mad ECM and hopfully H2O/meth.

Well it looks like your trans is built to handle the power so I'd say do the 5's. They make a lot of power and create a lot of smoke and a lot of heat. If your looking for a good towing injector or something with a little more oomph, then I'd try the 2's or 3's.

Those are the directions I used. It's really very, very simple.

Will the 5's smoke all the time or only when I put my foot in it?

They should only smoke when you put your foot into it.

O.K. maybe I should go with the 3's.

More questions.

1. When people refer to "tips", are they talking about the "nozzels"?
2. Do others who sell injectors sell them installed in the "injector bodies"?
3. And lastly what should I expect to pay to have them "pop tested and shimmed"?

lots of info to soak up, huh?
1. yes
2. yes
3. don't know, i bought mine complete.
for excellent info on the Jammer stuff, get an email to Keith Locklier at Diesel Dynamics. He has helped me a TON, and is extremely knowledgeable in regards to DD stuff.
Are you planning to change turbos? soon? someday? the stock hy35 on your auto is quite a limiting factor for boost levels. general rule of thumb, don't run the hy over 32 lbs of boost. beyond that you start losing power and making more heat in egt. at least upgrade to a stock hx35 from a manual trans truck, larger exhaust housing will allow a bit more boost without getting completely out of its efficiency range.
rjohnson and hohn are a couple members here (as well as many of the vendors) that can advise you further on what's best for your application...
the bomb slope is long and treacherous, not to mention expensive and FUN!!

I almost went with threes. And now I think I wish I would have gone fives for the future. With the truck empty I have not trouble with EGT. I have not towed with them yet. If I get a hill and put it to the floor at 50 MPH I back off around 90MPH due to temps. I do have the HX35 though. I got them from City Diesel as complete tested and balanced injectors. Pulled mine put in the new ones. Well worth the $100 more.
