hy 9/ B1 twins

I know everybody likes the big twins (B1/B2, hx35/ht3b etc...) and dont get me wrong, I do too, however Im not looking for 700 ponies. What I would like is a set of quick spooling twins that arent starving for fuel with my current set up and that could be used for pulling (trailers mostly, and maybe a sled or two).
So this brings me to my quesion, Why wouldnt an hy 9 paired with a full B1 work in a twin set up? I know they wouldnt be as efficient as some of the bigger combos but wouldnt they work for fast spool up as well as flow for the 450-550 hp crowd? Keep in mind I have both the hy9 and the B1, and will be plumbing it up myself, so cost isnt really an issue.
All replies are welcome and I wont feel insulted if everyone thinks I am way off base here . Im just lookin for an alternate to the 700hp 100psi twins that most people are runnin'. Thanks in advance.

Wont work.

No real compound effect.

Hy is close 650 CFM
B-1 close to 850

See the trouble? Its a sealed system between stages. Or, the B-1 is the max amount of CFM the system will acheive in any case. The CFM is not additive in compounds.

Single B-1 = 850 CFM
Hy9 + B-1 = 850 CFM With a higher pressure. No "real" benefit

Don,
Would you mind explaining the theory on the above reply a bit more. I'm curious. Scott

I'd think all you'd be doing is raising your backpressure.

If you want to keep your Hx35 use a H3e for the big turbo. Not as big as the B2-less expensive too. Good spoolup and enough air to keep the egts down. THe smaller turbo spools up and pushes air into the bigger turbo. THe smaller the upper turbo the hotter the air charge going into the bigger turbo. With a B1 as the"big" turbo when the boost gets to a usable level the charge air temp is higher than the the B1 running alone. It just will spool up a little quicker.

I wasnt aware that the hy9 flowed 650 cfm . So by "no real benifit" you mean no hp gain and no quicker spool either? Im really not lookin for massive hp (my OFE is slippin' as it is) I just want hy9 spool with my B1 ...and an excuse to stick my truck in the shop and do some tiggin' .

An HY-9 has been tried before with Twins without any good luck, Some people said yea it will work the best and will spool instantly, I bet it would for the first 2 seconds then it would be like running breathing through a straw. There is one combo that we all know will work as it has been tried time and time again, a 35 with an HT3B, now depending on what your doing with it will decide the housings and configuration, lets say for giggles that you want moderate power and don't tow all the time, for that idea I would use a 35 with a 14 or 16 housing and a 3B with a 26 and go up from there, anyone of these setup's would need a divorced wastegate to run optimal and modified turbo's would defineately be best for spool up but not a have to. I ran a stock 35/16 with with a PDR HT3B/26 starting at about 440-450 hp to about 600 then went to an 18.5 on top and took that combo to 700+...(674 on fuel only) way past were it should have been, with my current combo it drives better, spools better(yes better) and dropped the airtemps a whole bunch.

For what you are looking for, you may be happy if you modify your B1 to quick spool version. This will give you the faster spooling you want, and keep your airflow (CFM) about the same.

The alternative, as we discussed before, would be to sell what you got, and fab up a twin setup with a 35/3b combo. This would also get you where you want to be without a lot of additional costs. Third option, of course, is to get a better paying part time job and just blow some dough on it for the B1/B2 setup. Let me know when you get started on this, I would like to give you a hand with it.

Where can I find some different housings for the 3B? I got a 27 on it now and kinda interested in a smaller one, maby a 22. Would like to find one on a salvage truck or somethin but dont know what application to look for. What housing do you dodge guys usually use?

Sorry about hijackin the thread, just seemed like a good place to ask.

Hey Bean 22cm for it are rare but you can buy it new for about $250. 23cm are less rare and will run you about $185. I just bought a new BHT3B with a 23cm for $425. I hope I was right with my 23cm guess. I don't really want to buy antoher housing
