HX 35/40 Hybrid

If I have an HX 35 and I have an HX 40, how does one make a hybrid HX 35/40 or is it something that has to be done by a "professional"?

Go to high tech turbo (htt.com i believe). They will sale the wheel housin and everything for I believe 381, then they can machine it to fit for 80 bucks so I would think since you have the parts you should be able to just send in both turbos and for 80 ot 100 bucks you can have a hybrid.

I have the ability to do the machine work myself. Why do I need to buy a new wheel housing? Guess Im not that educated on the process involved. Thanks.

It's been a while since I did my last one but I ***think*** that the 60mm six blade wheel is the one that requires the center section c'bore of the turbo to be opened up by about .100" diameter. The rest is a bolt on. This is the one that is preferred. I'd try the swap to see if the housing fits properly before bothering to machine the center section. It's an easy upgrade if you have access to a lathe or mill. Also, you only have to remove the center & front sections from the truck. Leave the exhaust housing in place & just unbolt the center section from it. Cover the oil holes with plenty of duct tape before spinning it in the lathe.

Anybody have any specifics as far as pictures or diagrams of what exactly needs to be machined as I dont know the internals of the charger very well. So basically it is just the compressor of the HX40 on the exhaust housing of the HX35? If the 35 and the 40 have the same center shaft but different compressor wheels, what makes the hybrid much stronger than an HX40 alone?

High tech says the shaft in the HX40 is weaker than the HX35.

Don't know why but thats what I've always heard that the HX40 has a weak shaft but thats what I've heard never seen one on a truck, but I know a guy who runs a super 40 on a 12v and it seems to run fine, took alot of cuttin to get it to fit on a 12v though.

What did you have to cut to make it fit? I was under the impression that the shaft was the same but the 40 compressor wheel is bigger therefore breaking shafts easier. Dont know for sure as stated above, just probing because I need more air!

Don't quote me on this but I think the exhaust wheel is bigger on the 40 than the 35. The extra weight is what causes shaft problems.
Where the air side wheel fits back into the turbo housing has to be machined for the bigger wheel to fit. I don't know if you can put the 35 shaft and exhaust wheel into the 40 turbo center section or not. If you can it would be a simple changeover.

35 and 40 shafts are the same, that is why you can make a hybrid of the two. The bigger wheel on the 40 causes more stress on the shaft then in a 35, so yes a 40 is more likely to snap a shaft, but not because the shaft is weaker, but because the parts it is spinning are heavier.

Same rebuild kit for HX 35, HY 35, and HX 40 so I'd assume the center sections are nearly identical.
