how much timing??

hey guys just curious how much timing to advance my pump, i see most guys run 16-17 degrees of timing, but im not sure what to set mine at, i was wondering if i went a little higher if i would have problems . this is what will be done to the engine when everthing is said and done

-435 injector
-lasercut dvs
-4k rpm kit and springs
-twins(stock hx-35 and s400)
-#4 fuel plate
-12mm studs
-marine headgasket
-built tranny
-possibly water/meth system

so what amout of timing would go well with that setup. the truck is my daily driver and PLAY TOY

18* would be fine with that much fuel.

Forget 18*, go 30 or go home, lol. JK. Your HG might not like that too much.

I have close to that, but running 370's. I liked 20* with studs and regular gasket, but 28* really rocks if you have it ringed i am running a single though, with twins you may want to keep it around 18*. My vote is to try 18* and see how you like it.

well it sounds like 18 would be good but im still open for any more opinions also any pros and cons to going to high or low, not that i would go lower , also won't putting my timing at like 25-30 give me that loping sound that all the hotrodded pulling diesels have because that would be SWEET, not sure if thats a good timing set for a daily driver, but i could always change back. thanks

I ran mine at 28* last year before i tore it down for an overhaul, and that is where i will set it when i get it back together. i didnt have the lope though, i think cam's compression, and injectors/pump work make the biggest difference on that. the higher the timing the less low end power and more difficult to start, but once the rpms come up it really comes alive. Mine didnt pull very well below 2,000 but from about 2500 all the way to 4k plus nothing would stop it. I drove it daily like that with no issues, but if i was planning to do alot of towing i would stick to 18-20* to keep the low end.

Since ur head is built up

and u didnt state u tow alot, 20 degrees would really wake it up.. Gunracer1 runs 20 degrees, 370s, a 4K kit, and a big turbo and has a hard runnin 450 plus horse truck...

okay good i like getting more opinions and thoughts, so i guess when i do the timing i will just have to find the sweet spot, i will probably try 18 first then move to 20 and maybe try like 22-28 just to see how it runs. thanks guys.

If you arent o-ringed, i would not go past 22* or you will most likely blow the marine gasket w/ studs

I know I'm living on borrowed time but I run 23 degrees with a stock HG and stock bolts. I do not, however, exceed 45 psi boost on an HTB2 64/14. I worked slowly up to the 23. Don't know if thats the best setting but it works. Hard to really tell much difference from 20 to 23 but from 16 to there, yes.

It is a daily driver and I plow snow and pull sleds with it. It will even take my 1 year old daughter to the grocery store .

This Spring I do plan on more head work just to be on the safe side though.

I know for a fact that 28* will lbow a 20 over marine gasket and studs, i blew mine in 8 places but i was already planning to tear the truck down and do some head work etc so i figured "what the heck, lets see what it will do"
