hooking up gauges

I have a set of 2 isspro boost, and pyro gauges coming in for my truck, with a pillar for my christmas present. I have a few questions about hooking up the gauges. When i hook up my pyro, i would like to do it before(pre) turbo because its more accurate, but am scared of hurting the turbo. Any advice on that? Do you leave the engine running or off when drilling the hole? Where exactly do i put my boost sensor at? Im thinking the intake manifold but not positive. Where did you guys run yours into the cab at? Did you drill holes in the firewall? Thanks for any help.

Eric

TST's web site has the directions for installing the pyro sensor in the manifold. Drill and tap the hole with the engine off but load the flutes of the drill and tap with grease. I double checked mine with a magnet and found no filings in the manifold.
I think I used an existing hole through the dash to feed the wires inside using the existing bushing.
My 95 had a plugged hole in the intake by the injector pump for the boost guage. Just install fittings and run line to guage.
Good luck. Its not a hard install.

Eric, I drilled my exhaust without using grease. I used a magnet and fished around in the hole until I couldn't get any more filings. There is a divider wall right in the center, so you need to be sure to drill between the center and outside. I was surprised how easily the manifold drilled and tapped, I didn't think it would be so soft.

Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it. Im excited about getting my gauges in now that ive finally got them. How long did it take you guys to hook up your gauges, and does every truck have theplugged hole in the intake manifold, or was that from where a previous owner had a boost gauge in it? Thanks again for all the help.

Got my gauges in yesterday!! Mounted them on the pillar last night, and today, i hooked up all my pyrometer stuff except for drilling and tapping the hole in the manifold(might do that tonight when dad gets home). We accidentally didnt order boost gauge tubing, and thats on its way now(ordered last night). All i really have to do now is hook up the boost gauge, wire the lights into light switch, and drill and tap boost, and pyro holes. Thanks again for all the help guys.

Got my pyrometer hooked up tonight, and didnt realize it would be so fun to watch . I didnt think it would fluctuate so much so fast. Now that ive got that hooked up, where do i need to tap into for my boost gauge(stuff should get here by the 6th)? Do i need to take off the intake manifold before i do it? What size hole should i drill? Thanks for the help guys .

Wish it was as easy to get at as this picture shows, many items have been removed for clarity, you shouldn't have to remove anything though. Personally prefer to toss the compresson fitting that comes with most boost gauges and use a 90° one from the auto parts instead. Use anti-seize rather than Teflon tape for thread sealer.

Another trick that will help install immensely is to push the small tubing though some larger (1/4'') tubing before installing. This will keep the small tubing from kinking and protects against cuts and abrasion. No doubt when you installed your pyro you found there are some very sharp edges under the dash.
Depending on how tightly coiled the provided tubing is you may have to cut the larger tubing into shorter pieces in order to feed it though. No big deal just tape the outer tube back together. If the provided tubing is coiled tight it also helps to soak it in hot water, stretch out straight and hold with clothes pins, etc till it cools.
