xcumminsx,
To get in the 13s tranny upgrades are going to be a must. I'd highly suggest checking out ATS as they have some great upgrades to hold the power you'll be putting out. The 48re is a good step above the 47s, but it needs help. For power, I'd suggest the new TST box (150 hp), a set of injectors (~100hp) and a turbo to burn it & cool it (HX-40 size is big enough). That setup will easily put you in the mid 400hp range and easily running mid 13s.

The stock turbo on the HOs is a HX-35 with a 10 cm^2 housing. You'll run into serious EGT issues at the power level needed to run 13s with the stock turbo.

ok my friend says to go with a hx-50 from a bigger cummins. would this turbo have too much lag? and is there any place that sells a hx-40 for relatively cheap?

It may not be too lagy, but it is very fragile. No fun to huff a turbo.
A WG'd HX-40 with Zero Balancing (Balnced to Zero), and HD bearings should retail around $1,400.
I will recomend a DTT tranny.
Is your truck a 4x4? If so, you will be able to rip som eseriously competitive 60' times. If not, you will have to make up a loss of traction in the 60' on the top-end with plenty of HP.
The Common Rail engine is capable of making plenty of HP.
Get Gauges, you will need Boost presure, EGT, Fuel pressure and trans temp.
You will run into a problem with the Lift pump,, it is not going to keep up with the demand of the CP3 and you will encounter missing/stumbling
Be sure not to over tighten the injector wires when you install bigger injectors,, that would make for a bad day. Don't get any of the connectors/sensors wet on top of the motor (keep the sensors plugged in when washing the motor, don't worry about getting the outside of the sensor wet).
A Bully Dog RFI (Rapid Flow Intake) will improve airflow, or any cold air intake (except K&N).
Besides Gauges, Tranny, Injectors, box and a turbo, nothing else is really needed.
After you commit to spending the money on all those items, it only depends how much more you are willing to spend to go faster. (Example: a 100HP Injector might cost $800 while a 175HP injector will cost $1,100) So for $300 more, you could get 75HP. (Get my point)
What upgrades will you not need? You won't need a cam, exhaust manifold upgrade, gear/axle/tire upgrades, intercooler upgrades, etc. The only things you need to upgrade are the things afore mentioned.
Hope this helps,
Merrick Cummings Jr
P.S. *I* would run Head studs. This will not require removing the head. You should remove the rocker arms when doing head studs, when you re-install them, you shouldn't have to readjust the valves. The head studs apply more clamping force to the headgasket than a headbolt. The stock headgasket should be good for about 50PSI. With headbolts, I've heard up to 60PSI boost.

Re:goal = 13.8 1/4 mile need help
Stock turbo on ALL 03 trucks is HY35.
You'll definatly want tranny work to make it get down the road faster.
Pick one of the boxes for the 03, do some injectors, change the turbo to a bigger single or compound setup and I would think your well into the 13's. Might check out Diesel Dynamics for the 03 injectors and a upgraded turbo.

Re:goal = 13.8 1/4 mile need help
The stock HY on the 03 will have to go. I will have a Hybrid bolt up turbo for the 03's by the end of the month. Will spool faster than the HX40's and should be good for 400 HP. I am running one on my 02, but waiting on machined parts for the 03 trucks. 03 extrude honed injectors are avaliable from stage 2 (80HP) to stage 5 (140HP) prices are the same for any stage. Just got some new torque converters and tranny parts from Art Carr Performance. The best fueling boxes for the 03's are yet to come.
