Ok, I see that a lot of people have changed their lift pumps, changed to bigger lines, and/or changed injector pumps. Why? Is it volume or pressure problems? Do you have to change them when you mod your truck? How far can you mod your truck before you have to get into the fuel system?

 

People have fuel system issues even stock which is why Dodge is replacing them with the in tank jobs =\ You don't need anything fancy- fuel is fuel. A stock pump and a line kit did fine at 490 hp for me. The bigger lines and high flow fittings help keep pressure from dropping as quickly.

 

On the VP44 trucks Volume is what is needed. As long as pressure stays above 4psi at WOT and doesnt exceed 18psi at idle you're g2g! Too much pressure CAN damage the IP over time but too little WILL damage it in a short period! (anything over 14-15psi will bypass back to the tank anyway I believe)

The IP gets hot and it uses the fuel to help cool it. Good flow/volume will keep it cool enough to live but too much will damage the diaphram and not enough will over heat it. Finding a good balance of flow and keeping it between the posted pressures would be key to long pump life. A fuel pressure gauge is a must have with these trucks!

Good results have been had by re-locating the factory LP to the frame and using a big line kit to help with volume!

 

Where is the lift pump located? I can here it run.

 

A factory stock pump is behind the fuel filter, drivers side engine mounted. Replacement dealer pump is in the tank. After market of most types look on the drivers side frame under the drivers door.

There are plenty of options and opinions on aftermarket LP's read up but in the end it's your money.
