Fuel Plate Questions

Allright guys. My fuel plate has a pretty decent defueling curve up towards the top, looks to me like, and my truck doesent really pull as hard up top as i would like. I plan on adding some 215 injectors soon which should help out, and i would like to grind the defueling part of my plate flat with the deepest point in the curve. My plate is already an aftermarket plate(city diesel brand), so what is the best way to go about grinding it to keep it smooth/hard enough. I have 2 pictures of my plate I will post. Also, my truck starts to quit pulling at about 2800rpm's. When i had the governor springs 2 clicks tighter it would pull well to about 3200, but didnt start as quick, so i backed them off 2 clicks. Im thinking i am going to try 1 click forward on each spring and see where that puts me. Any suggestons on this stuff is appreciated. Thansks guys

Eric

2 pictures of my plate, where you can clearly see it defuels up top quite a bit. How much gain will i see by grinding it flat with the seepest part of the "curve"?

Some folks seem to think my plates don't need to have a mirror finish but then again they don't have my plate.

Polish it. Rough it in with a grinder then go finer with a drum sander on a dremmel, then hand sand with 380 emery (remember your doing this to get the scratches out) the 600 wet dry then 1000 wet dry then back to the dremmel with a felt wheel and metal polish such as Simi-Chrome. This is what I do takes an hour. I just got my #100 back from my brother got...DIESEL? (he's trying one of my hush hush new plates) had NO WEAR marks what so ever. Polishing = less resistance and acts like a harder surface regardless of what the critics say it's worth it

Simply grinding the ramp is not always the best solution. First be absolutely certain that your pump is properly set up so the follower is square and follows everywhere it should. Piers used to have a good set of instructions on his site for doing this, and I imagine they are still there.

Once you see exactly where the lever on the rack follower runs on the cam, and know it is square, then you can try removing a bit of metal from the fuel stop. Use a bit of Prussian Blue on the follower and let it rub the stop, then mill only the blue dyed area to what you want. If you have a good eye and a jig, a chain saw file will do wonders, but keep in mind that you need to have a transition that fits with the power curve as dictated by your engine's camshaft, or you will go backwards.

On a 94 you are much ahead of the game to just bite the bullet and install a 3,000 rpm Governor Spring Kit. That will provide you with the smooth transition you need, and get rid of the defueling spot at 2,800 rpm or so, much better than trying to add a click or so to the tension.

Northslop: Thanks for the info. I might try that out here pretty soon. And i have seen your plates, and they are sweet

RCW: I have already adjusted my governor lever arm per Piers instructions. It is just how it should be. I also already have a 3k GSK, but I need to tighten the springs a click because it is defueling around 2800 or so. Id like for it to fuel hard to at least 3k. I may even go ahead, and put 2 clicks back in them.

thanks guys

got...DIESEL? put one of my "new" plates in his truck which has a defueling ramp on it noticed no loss in power the only loss was smoke & egt's in 4th & 5th hammered to the floor and he claims to have picked up a little more snap and a little quicker out of the hole. My thoughts on a no defueling ramp are only if you got the air sure otherwise it makes a neat cloud but that's pretty much all. I'm still running a #100, but soon to change it to my "new" plate. I'll share more on my "new" plate design when I get patent protection (just sent the papers off saturday ) I think alot of you guys are gonna like it!!! If I can get the tooling set up right I'll be selling them on e-bay soon hopefully.

On another note governor lever travel (according to Mark @ PDR with a 4k gsk) is only 3/8" of and inch from the bottom to the top of the plate, depending where your lever is set of course, what distance does it travel before it gets to defueling? If it's close to the top of the travel it probably would be worth more left alone (the hot rod plate that is). If I were you I'd get that stock plate out of the tool box or find one and start experimenting before you put that $250 dollar plate to the grinder!!!

Have a merry Christmas all!

I wish i had the stock plate... The guy that had the truck before me had the plate put in it right before i got it. I think i will just leave my plate alone, and get a stock plate from somewhere a little later to play with. Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you too
