Fuel Plate Question

Got some questions about the Fuel Plates you can put in the P7100 pump. Im pretty new to the whole diesel thing, so bear with me. I have a 95 with the 175hp pump and a handshaker (manual trans.). I just got done putting the #5 plate in (kinda looks like a #100 plate from what I've seen). I also have autometer phantom 2 gauges, (mechanic boost, elec. exhaust temp, elec. oil temp). I have my exhaust temp probe about 3 inches down from the exhaust elbow on the turbo. I used the guard when installing the plate so its in the orignial position, but i turned the star wheel so it smokes, and boy does it smoke. hehehe. When i get on it, it seems almost like stock until it get to around 2000rpm, then it takes off like a rocket, i was wondering if there was any way to get it to be consistant. I also notice that when i get on it through all the gears that the exhaust temp reads around 1000, is that a little high for being down 3" down the pipe. If so, should i turn the star wheel. I was also wondering what it should be boosting at WOT. From what ive seen it goes to around 28 but its hard to tell, i need to get a snubber. Thanks for having such a good forum, i think ive learned more on this in the last week then i have about cummins in the past year.

You need to adjust your governer arm. Sounds like it is too low. I just did mine. Mine would do the rocket launch at 1500 rpm. I have the governer arm plate about the thickness of the plate below the J hook. I went to high on the first adjustment and could only produce 22 lbs of boost, with it to low I was produceing 38 lbs of boost too much. So on the second adjustment I got it right 32 lbs of boost fuels all the way through the rpm band. It is a bit of a tight spot to get at the arm adjustment, but it is worth the effort to do.I also lost 50 degrees of egt on my test hill with this adjustment

I said to adjust it just below thej hook but that is wrong I meant to say just below the tip of the j hook. Here are two very good pages about this. Got diessel has a real good post on this subject.

Turn in to go up and out to go down.

Nates90:

Watch your EGT's. You can add 200-300 degrees to the post turbo reading to be more accurate so you are probably at 1200-1300 which if kept up too long will result in carnage. Do you have a boost elbow on the turbo? This may help to control temps and smooth out your power. TST has the boost elbows for around $25 or check some old posts for blocking the wastegate. Give these a try but watch the EGT's.

ur fueling has alot to do with the profile of the 5 plate...if i remember the 5 plate has a curve cut out in it a lil higher up...and therefore the strong fuelign comes on later on...designed to save ur tranny ...and give u good top end....thats why u will here alot of guys preachign the 10 plate or 100plate...because u get consistency and a smooth fuelign cruve from the beginning to the end of the rpm band

if u want it to feel like a 10 plate u can....just adjust the gov arm so that the lip will hit the very begining of the fuel curve on the plate..you'll probably have to elevate the arm some

I put two pages up in one of my posts one of them does a very good job of describing how to and where the gov. arm should be.

The #5 is a tranny killer. It fuels very hard down low, unlike the #10. The #10 is a tranny saver because the bottom end fueling is minimal as compared to a #5.
