Exhaust....4" or 5"

Aight the Scotty II comes in the mail on thursday. Next comes exhaust. With just the EZ and no plan to really BOMB my truck until after warranty expires 40,000 miles from now which system should I go with? Leave it stock? 4" or 5"? If 4 or 5 which system. I found a stainless 4" MBRP online for $309, but it looks like MBRP has a muffler, and I don't want a muffler.

I've had many variations of both over 2 trucks now and I'm going back to 5" straight pipe. It'll ring your ears after a few hours on the highway but its worth it for the sound. Really no performance difference between the two unless your up past 550hp, heck straight piping your stock exhaust would provide plenty of flow for what you need, but 5" sounds GOOD.

Call Rip Rook, he IS the exhaust guru, always been happy with his product and service.

Go with the 4".
5" is overkill and not really worth it till you've got major HP, 600 or higher.

does it matter which system? On most systems can you delete the muffler?

IMO not really, pipe is pipe. Usually you can get a muffler delete or "test pipe" in place of the muffler. As far as install, I've heard some come with more complete kits than others but I've always had mine installed "in house" so I wouldnt be much help there.

Do they salt the roads in texas? If not aluminized will last plenty long enough unless you just want stainless and pay the extra $$.

Ive been struggling with that same question myself.

Id recommend Warpspeed (comes with a 5" S.S. tip). Warpspeed currently has 4" systems but will be offering 5" in the near future.

OR Rips Fair Shake

MBRP has a straight pipe version of their 4" system. The straight piped 4" is A LOT louder than a straight 3", IMO.
Contact Mark at DPP. for info on this kit.

I've had factory straight pipe w/5" turndown ---- Sounded Nice and throaty, noisy on the the freeway.
Then I went 4" muffled system, sounded cheesy, but nice for driving.
Then lost the muffler, but couldn't stand it on the long trips. So I bought a Dynomax Bullet Muffler (4"x12") which cut out the drone. Really made it nice.

Right now I'm in transition...I sold my 4" to a friend, but I've got 5" to go on when I get time. So for now I'm running 3" Black STACKS run in front of the flatbed!! Sounds AWESOME, but you can tell the engine can't breathe through the 3" single pipe underneath above 2500RPM. They're really pretty quiet with the windows up...I went on a 1000 mile trip with the trailer and it was never obnoxious or loud. I think the Scotty II is louder than they are! Roll down the windows and all bets are off, though

Whoops, sorry for the long post, but I thought I'd share my experiences with my exhaust

4" is perfect.

Remember, with almost everything engine related, there is a "Goldilocks" effect. Too big or too small is not as good as "just right". You CAN over do it!

FWIW.
The 5" IMHO sounds great. It is more $ and probably not necessary, but dang it sounds GOOD. No freeway drone at all. Now to be fair I have not towed with it yet. Everyone that has heard it in person has liked it. No one has said yet..... that its too loud.
