Edge EZ for Gen 2; Would you Buy again?

I have considered wether the ROI on this product is worth the money, not to mention potential VP44 issues. Some people seems to get better mileage/power, others no.
Seems like a new one is $300+ and a used maybe $100. @$4/gal= 25gal x20 mpg= 500 miles.
So, is it worth it?
Would you do it again?
Also, there seems to be some failures too.
It seems these Gen 2's do better left stock (mostly).
Opinions?

I had one on my '98.5 for six years. Combined with the supplied boost elbow it worked great. I believe a J-hook is supplied your year.

Cheap reliable power with a dab better fuel economy.
I would get gauges though. EGT's can get hot if you bog it under throttle.

I have been happy with mine. Bought it used so I could turn up my boost (they boost fool). It has been a pretty good match for 100hp injectors which you can add later. But just a heads up: my clutch survived 100hp extra fueling but when I put the EZ on I promptly wrinkled the lining on my clutch disc. Didn't slip, just wouldn't disengage due to the warpage.

As to egt's, mine has three settings you can choose by opening the end of the unit. On mine the stock injector setting with 100hp tips BILLOWS smoke at low rpm wot. Middle setting is not bad, and the large injector setting is pretty mild. I run the middle setting to have responsiveness and use my foot to moderate smoke.

But again, that's with 100 hp injectors. You still can turn the unit down with stock injectors though.

My egt's stay under control unless I'm pulling over 5k and bogging the engine. I would look for preturbo exhaust leaks and boost leaks if I saw high egt's with just the EZ.

my truck had a power puck when I bought it, gave it to my friend and it works better on his all stock 01 2500 then it did on my (all stock at the time) 01 3500, I run the ez edge it seems to work much better on my 01 3500, you can get em factory reconditioned on ebay cheaper, my ez edge came with the nipple for the stick turbo but don't recall if it cam with the J hook for the automatic

Yeah,I had Mach 1.6 injectors with my EZ and the truck was quick. The DTT auto really delivered the power to the ground.
However, without the EZ the truck wasn't that much quicker, smoked like a banshee and ran hot all the time. Reconnected the box and wowee.
Great simple product.

I would do it again, simple and effective. Really wakes the truck up and makes it more fun to drive. Mileage is slightly better if you keep your foot out of it (hard to do though).

The only downsides I have come across are surging under heavy load when it is cold out, (from what I gather it is from too much timing advance combined with the HO VP44). I never had an issue with this using the stock injectors, but with the 275's it is very noticeable. (I'm not 100% sure it is all the EZ, still sorting it out).
The stock clutch lasted a while and then finally started to slip @ full throttle but only with the trailer hooked up (before injector upgrade).
EGTs are a non-issue for me, even towing 10-12k they never get above 1200.

All that was required in Commiefornia for my 2001 Ram smog check last year was a "snap" test. It's about as simple a test as can be. Rapidly "snap" the accelerator to 2500 rpm and the tech checks for visible smoke. Also rev to 2500 and hold with same check by the tech for smoke. No sensors up the pipe.

Yeah,no issues with the smogging of diesels presently, but I imagine the ****'s at CARB are looking to fire up the rollers on us soon.

I would do it again, in fact I still have it and use it as a boost fooler only right now.

If you want the best of both worlds, do a little creative wiring and make the EZ switchable.

All you do is take the wiring for the CANBUS side of the EZ and extend it into the cab using a DPDT switch. When you don't want or need the timing advance......when cold or don't want the extra smoke for example, turn the EZ "off". Like mentioned, you do get surge sometimes when cold and also timing rattle when really cold.

It's a real simple modification, I've done it to mine and a couple of other EZ's. Timing and fuel when you want it, boost fooling all the time regardless of whether switch position.

Something to think about.

Jeff
