Cutting stacks...

Who all here has had to cut their stacks down from being too long? How did you do it? Does anyone know the best way to do so without making it look bad or ruin the chrome on the edge that has been cut? I have a 14" chop saw would I be able to do this without any problems? Any info to be shared would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ya'll!

I used a dewalt chop saw to cut mine to length... No big scarring or anything . My stacks are chrome and the cut end was put down into the crossover

Well the only thing that makes me leary of using a chop saw is the fact that the end I have to cut is the top With a good blade (with a rubber-like coating on the sides to make it smooth) could the 14" chop saw work on the visible end?

The only problem with cutting the top end , is that edge is going to rust where you cut it , and it will be visible.

Are you cutting the top so you don't lose the overlap flare at the bottom? You should be able to find a big rig muffler shop there somewhere that can re-flare a pipe that large.

The only reason I want to cut the top is because they are straight cuts and I would prefer miter... the flare at the bottom isnt a big deal to me at all, I can/could work around not having one.

I don't know if you have access to one but a band saw should be able to cut the correct angle with less chance of damage than a chop saw, with the right blade. We used to use one in my old welding shop and it did the job perfect, stacks aren't very thick and you could wrap the stacks in a rag lock them in a vise at the correct angle and cut right through.

Just my .02 worth.

I used a band saw to cut mine. I cut the top as well and there hasn't been any rust on them ever. Still nice and shiny....well, at least until the upper 5"

put masking tape all the way around the stack where you are gonna cut it to keep from chipping the chrome, cut with a good/brand new fine tooth metal blade and cut slow to keep the heat down...when you make the cut leave the masking tape on it and spray some flat black paint on the edge of the cut metal and inside of the stack. once it gets some soot on it you will never know and it shouldn't rust if you are careful and take your time.

yeah i say use the band saw. Even if the edge starts to rust you will not be able to see it cause it will be all black.
