just my 2 cents what ever you decide make sure you have something that you can hold onto and keep using. if you get this crazy diesel bug in next year you will be upgrading "go parts" and a tranny. I'm happy with my set up but I knew in the begining that I wanted alot of fuel, alot of low end and I can say that with the the HO smarty and sticks its a great truck and I get better MPG now with what I currently have running 37's then when I was stock. good luck.
I would do the fuel system mods first, then do some upgrades to the transmission like a valve body/converter. You'll spend less money this way. Hopefully your transmission is in decent shape inside and you just install the new parts. After that, throw on a fueling box and set of injectors and a 4in exhaust. You'll be impressed on how much more power you'll have available. Its hard for me to imagine what a stock truck drives like, mines been modified since I drove it off the dealer lots back in 02.
