You need the boost elbow to allow the wastegate to open at higher boost pressure as opposed to the stock levels.

You most likely won't have enough fuel to need the boost elbow with just a Smarty.

Bigger injectors along with the Smarty, and the boost elbow will be a good thing.

Just put a tack weld on your waste gate & you won't have to worry about the elbow or wastegate.

You don't need one with a Smarty.

Not true, You'll need something to control the wastegate for more boost.

The Smarty has a boost fooler to prevent codes.

Um, tack weld it? I just used a pipe plug where the elbow was to disable the wastegate and when I want to run a wastegate again I just have to put the elbow back in =P

This is what I'm running. With just a Smarty you won't get more than ~30psi out of an HX-35 so just go to a hardware store and get a plug for a couple of dollars. Now if you ever add anything else to it you will need an elbow to allow the wastegate to open up around 35psi.
