Boost elbow - emergency thoughts needed
Boost elbow - emergency thoughts needed
When I installed my Juice, I also installed a "boost elbow", but I have no idea what I did, or what it does. The instruction manual says very little, and I don't have whatever I took off back when I installed it.
I have little idea of what the boost elbow does, or if it will affect my smog test.
If anyone knows if it will adversly affest anything, please tell me before Monday morning when I'm supposed to go take my SMOG test !!!
Thanks in advance!
Doug

boost elbow allows higher boost, which will in effect clean up smoke...but without the Edge doing boost fooling, the truck may trip a code and defuel, if it defuels you will know as you will have very little power,
boost elbow screws into the turbo, so any 90* fitting that you can hook the hose to will work,
as in the other posts if edge has a CARB number why cant you leave it on? (just asking as we dont have testing here...yet)

I don't think the "Juice" is acceptable here in California, but I don't know that to be a fact. The smog guy told me to take it off prior to the smog test so I already did.
As far as the boost elbow goes, should I replace it with something else??
Is it just a 90* with a large diameter hole in it?
Should I pull it out and plug it?
I just don't remember what was there stock...
Thanks...

So are you saying that the "boost elbow" constricts the airflow? (to and from wherever it goes) by using a smaller orificed device??
I just don't understand what exactly it does, or how it does it.
I'm driving the truck around and it seems fine, and I'm not throwing any codes, so do you think it will pass the smog test as is? Or should I try to figure out what the correct fitting is that should go there?
Sorry for the questions, I just have to take the test tomorrow, and I don't want to fail because I'm stoopid!

The elbow simply allows the wastgate to open at a higher pressure. If you have no added fuel to your truck, you will likely not get past the stock boost pressure anyway to throw a code. Unless they do a WOT run in a higher gear, you won't see much boost anyway. Aren't most tests just a snap test on the throttle and a visual inspection?

Just to let you know the boost elbow does two things to lower the air pressure to the wastegate actuator. The first is a small orifice(3-4 mm) to restrict flow (usually a threaded allen set screw so it is adjustable). The second thing it does is bleed a small amount of air through a small drill hole(~1 mm) in the brass elbow after the restriction orifice(screw). Hence the pressure to the actuator is reduced, more exhaust spins the turbo rather than bypassing, and more air is put into the engine. My own boost elbow has a small brass valve on a brass T to make it more adjustable in bleeding air off. The boost elbow only replaces the original "3/8" barb fitting that came with the turbo.
Took me awhile to figure this all out until I bought a chip and I had to figure it out.
