EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED: 2000 7.3 PowerStroke - Won't Run Right...

We are stranded, and I'm making this post from my iPhone - The truck sounds like its running on 4 cylinders - if you press the throttle all the way down it still won't go above 5MPH.

The oil was low so we topped it off and it ran good for a few minutes then started doing it again.

We are changing the fuel filter now.

What else could it be?

I'll try to answer any questions that you may have - we need to get this thing running.

what year ford and does it have a metal or plastic fuel tank? metal ones are having a hard time of late, delamination of the coating inside, taking out all downstream coponenents, ford is not owning up tot he problem and making owners pay for repairs,

I am by far not the best to diagnose a Ford, but it is possible you are loosing an o ring in the high pressure oil pump. Some times they leak internally if you don't see any oil leaking into the valley. But check there too just to make sure. I would also do a search for one of the powerstroke forums. They would probably be able to help more. Good luck.

How low was the oil? That sounds like oil aeration, very common problem with the HEUI injection system when the oil sump is to low. Shut the engine down and wait about 10 minutes, be sure the oil is at least in the center of the cross hatch. Restart the engine and allow it to idle for about 1 minute, then hold the rpms up at 1200 for about 2-3 minutes, then let is idle. that should bleed the air from the high pressure oil feeds to the injectors.

Let us know, I will keep an eye on this thread to help you out.

I've had something like this happen before. Check to see if one bank of the injector wiring has come loose. It's possible that it is only running on four cylinders

I agree with this. Check the connector that plugs into each valve cover gasket. You may also have to remove each valve cover and check the connectors that plug into the gasket on the inside too. The connector locks can deform and allow the connectors to disengage.

Did you try what I suggested?

Wire chaffing has been somewhat of a problem at the back of the head where there is a plug for the valve cover gasket, the gasket contains all the wiring to fire the injectors. I HIGHLY doubt that one entire bank failed.

The symptoms you describe immediately push my thoughts to a high pressure oil pump problem. It could be a supply issue to the hpop, or it could be the hpop failing.

That engine needs to see a minimum of 800 psi of oil pressure at the injectors just to start. it should be about 1000 psi at idle and 3000 psi at 2500 rpm.

Do you have access to high pressure gauges?

As stated before. Check all the injecter connections. My '94 burned up the harness in the valve cover. wouldn't get out of it's own way. Missing bad. The harness runs to a connecter on the outside of the valve cover, & the wires to each injecter come out of the cover to get to the individual injecters.

Still not fixed - he won't listen to me.

Said he bought new batteries because a mechanic said the computer wasn't getting enough voltage

I'll let you know what it really was.
