Bhaf idea
Any thoughts on trying to adapt this into a BHAF. Farr ECO-SE filter
# Donaldson P537454
# Fleetguard AH1197
# Farr 114880003
# WIX 46748
# NAPA 6748
5" outlet would need to be reduced, the side inlet is less than optimal, and tubing would have to be replaced with something shorter, but 960 cfm, 10"x19.3" and I found one online for $60

Filter's sitting in my room now. $72 from Fleetfiler. I need some 5" tubing, a 45 degree 5 inch elbow to a 5 into 4 90 degree elbow some clamps and I think this will work.
I looked at the aftermarket and couldn't find anything that flowed what my turbo's manufacture tells me I need so here's a possible solution- a paper element in a disposable housing. Frankly I'm dissapointed in the lack of responses to my take on building a better bhaf. The solution seems simple to me- we just need a longer filter with shorter tubing. Good flow at 960 cfm @ 8 inches h20 plus good filtration. If I can find the usb cable for my camera I might post some pics once I git r done.

I would say make sure the filter will clean the air good enough. If it wont it is going to hurt your engine bad. That housing looks cool and prob. can be painted to match the truck. You cankeep the stock tube from the turbo just buy an adapter to match the Housing to the tube. Place the opening tword the fender where the cool air comes from and it should be a trick set up! The only problem I see with it is not enough air comming through the intake hole. You could cut it down some. Get some pics and keep us posted.

Oh I am. I was just hoping for feedback or someone to tell me I'm crazy
(still a strong possibilty) and was dissapointed seeing 300+ view w/o a comment. Got.. fleetfilter.com is definately the place to go for these, napa is twice as much and the receipt called it a wix/napa Farr Eco.
From what I've read you should be able to run this for 2 years or 50k miles before it needs replacement. The time limit is due to the paper becoming brittle, so I assume this would go for all the BHAF's.
I'm going shopping for tubing tommorrow. Truck supply, plumbing supply, hardware store,... any recommended materials for intake tubing? I can get everything I need from Air Flow system's web page, but it'd be around $50 for everything I'd need so I'm going to try to purchase the parts I'll need locally. If this works out well I'm calling it the Ph4tty air mod

I just ordered a grip of supplies from airflow to finish up the compounds.....good company. As for more ideas on ducting......good Q. I know for mine, I am going to stand the filter on end where the pass battery used to be, hook it to the primary via a rubber 90, then route the inlet of the filter down to the bumper through the fender floor where I will box in the bumper slots and use them as a collector box to ramair the filter.

I think that looks like a great filter. It's a BHAF and a heatshield all in one
Even with the Old Smokey mount, there's still room for hot air to enter the BHAF, on a 1st gen, anyway. I'd rather have a 5'' duct with nice cool air than the whole filter exposed to the hot air underhood. It's worth a shot--what's 60 bucks, anyway? A half tank?

I don't see why you couldn't use pvc or abs plumbing fittings and ferco couplings where necessary. Heat might be the biggest thing to watch out for. You may need to fabricate a heat shield of some sort. Spare exhaust tubing (if you have some lying around) might work too for you plumbing needs in the "hot" areas. I'd think the Fernco couplings would be a great for tying all this in. they have the Fernco's in reducing sizes if needed too.
Good luck and let us know how you make out, Matt

Yes I will need something to sheild the side of the enclosure from the turbo. I pulled the air box and placed the new filter in and took some measurements so far.
