Banks Power Add on

Just bought a 2003 Ram Diesel (Cal-Version 235 HP,460 Tourqe). Banks has the exhaust system available with the Dyna-Flow muffler. What kind of power increase will I see? Also, I was thinking about puting a K&N air filter on but was told those filters has oil in them which will stick to the turbo blades. Anyone know for sure? Thanks

Re:Banks Power Add on

You will not any increase of power with a drop in air filter or an Exhaust... I suggest you do some reading of past threads on this site about Power and the Diesel. I would not recomend Banks... I had an entire Banks Powerpack that I completely ripped off my truck. If you want specifics EDGE make a coputer box that makes 70hp at the rear wheels right now. TST will soon have a box out that makes 140hp at the rear wheels. These are plug-n-play boxes that take no time to install. I would also suggest an air intake over a drop in air filter. The Scotty air intake is my suggestion. It will be available soon.

Re:Banks Power Add on

Thanks guys, I cancelled my order. I noticed that my stock exhaust seems to be 4' in diameter. I guess i could put a high performance muffler on myself and save a few hundred bucks. Whats the best oil and grade to use? I was thinking of going synthetic.....Thanks for your help

chrismez:

Welcome to the website!!

You did the right thing by cancelling the Banks order!
I agree with what all the other members have already
told you about their products,......$$$$$$$$!!!

You may want to try your local NAPA dealer for a
muffler. Walker makes two performance mufflers for
the diesels (#21471 4" inlet, 4" outlet and a #21468
31/2" inlet, 3 1/2" outlet). I have run the 21471 on
my 96' and it sounded good. My son has a 2001 24
valve with the same muffler and it sounds even better
on his truck. You can purchase them for around $90.00.

As far as oil,........well that is a "personal preference"
thing. As new as your truck is I would wait awhile before
putting in the synthetic oil. I run the Delo 400 (15W40)
in my 96' and in my newer 2002 24 valve. I have also
run Shell Rotella T (15W40) with no problems. The Delo
400 does better on the "four ball wear test" than Rotella
or the Valvoline/Cummins Premium Blue 15W40. FYI, my
96' Dodge CTD has almost 196,000 miles it and I run the
truck very hard with alot of H.P.and torque.

Hope this has helped you some.

-------
John_P

Re:Banks Power Add on

I also use Delo 400.
But, you cant go wrong with Rotella or Cummins/Valvoline Premium blue 15w40.

I do think in the 03's case that a higher flow air filter will benefit you somewhat, I would advise an AFE air filter or the bullydog setup (which is available now).

The Edge EZ box for the 03 seems to be working well and adds about 70hp at the ground.
This should wakeup your California 03 alot!!
Edge has a Comp version coming soon for the 03.

Good luck with your truck!

--Justin

chrismez:

I saw absolutely NO INCREASE in H.P. or torque on the
dyno after the muffler install! Banks claims their 4"
exhaust will give 10-15 H.P. but I would have to see
that to believe it!

Yes, you can purchase all those oils at NAPA.

-------
John_P

Hey John P,

Do you run the stock exhaust on your 96 with the Walker 21471?? I guess I was asking if someone had stolen your Converter??

Does the muffler sound better than stock??

Thanks,

Mike
Re:Banks Power Add on

Guys, thanks for all the help. I think I will leave my truck as is for now. Anyone know anybody selling the RB1 navigation system for a reasonable price? Thanks

70DUSTER:

No, I don't have the "stock" exhaust on my 96' anymore.
I purchased a "Diesel Dynamics" full 4" system almost
three years ago. I did run the Walker #21471 for awhile
and liked it alot, but at the end of last summer decided
to try going "straight piped" for awhile! Another DTR
member (bullthisl) convinced me to do this at a Diesel
Rally we attended together. So far, I like it, although
at certain speeds (90 MPH+ ) it can get a little
loud!! And,......I also removed the converter when
I installed the 4" exhaust. Mine was REALLY plugged
bad! It looked there was "Kingsford Charcoal Briquets"
inside that thing!!

The Walker 21471 sounded alot better than the stock
muffler.

--------
John_P
