Bad Day at The Shop

Had a 3gsk installed yesterday, #10 plate slid forward when the mechanic went for a test drive it came back smoking and running rough. He said the timing slipped. Is it possible? The timing has never been mess with. Well... the truck is still in the shop. He could not remove (I think it's call the timing pin) and snapped it in half.

You can take the retainer clip off and pull the timing pin out to replace it. Problem will be getting the broken piece out from the gear. You could try air blow gun to blow it out and hope it goes somewhere other then between the timing gears. You can bar over engine and look with a mirror until hole is centered then maybe a wooden dowel or flat punch with grease on the end e broken piece will stick to it. Then the broken piece should come out very easy. If you remove the two screws that hold the TDC pin housing then exact TDC will not be possible any longer, so don't take the screws out. Procedure for setting exact TDC would have to be done if you do.. The gear timing slips if there is any oil on the tapered shaft when changing the timing of pump. These parts must be cleaned really well and dry and torqued to proper spec. When pushing the pin in you must bar engine over slowly and stop as soon as the pin goes in. If you continue to bar engine you will bind the pin up. If that happens you have to reverse rotation to relieve the pin from binding. I use long needle nose and catch the narrow part of timing pin then use leverage by pushing forward on handle to pull the stuck timing pin out. I helped many years ago with the write up for Chilton manual on injection timing for Cummin 12v, I think manual is still available in book stores or online.

I doubt your timing slipped though. Wouldn't hurt to check it, but I think something in the GSK kit install isn't right.

Doesn't make sense for the timing to be fine for 15 years then right after pump work ( never having touched the gear ) for it to start slipping.

Cant see a GSK kit causing an engine to run rough. Sometimes a GSK is all it takes to put enough stress on that pump gear to slip it. Heard of it a few times before....

He did drive it when he first installed the 3gsk and it ran fine. He then slid the plate foward to give it more fuel and after the second test drive that's when it happend.

Same thing happened to me when I had my 4gsk and messed with the plate and boost elbow.

Went out for a test drive, got on it and poof, slipped so bad that it stalled the truck and it would not restart. Had to have my wife come and tow my truck back home with here Caddy.

Will I got my truck back . It idles and runs smoother. Its sweet the way it just keeps fueling after 2100 rpms. Even in 3rd I can do 60 and still have more. It runs a lot cooler at least 200* cooler. The sad part it doesn’t smoke as much smoke as it used to. I use to smoke people that were on their cells and driving slow as if I had to wait for them to finish their conversation. Or the dumb *** that wouldn’t let me in a lane. I guess that’s part of living in California. One thing I noticed before I got the work done, my mileage was not as good as it use to be. I was getting 15, 16 mpg it use to be 20, 21. I checked my mileage today and I got 22.22 mpg. Maybe my timing had slipped and the add power made it slipped to the point it could not run. Could timing it to 16* give me that mileage?

16 is fine, I highly doubt you or the engine would notice the 1/2 degree difference anyways...

Very common for the timing to slip right after hp increases.
More hp requires more torque to turn the injection pump, gear slips.
